    Second, no--his abdication was constitutionally unprecedented, and there is significant question as to whether abdication is legal both under English law and under the general Salic law. Your argument is a bit like saying, well since people can and do murder people, it mustn't be a big deal.

    I suppose if we can't have "off with their heads" then "off with their tops" is suitable in this case. Although I'd not want to continue this pattern much

    Well, right. But as I understood, wasn't much of the crisis (and the thing requiring him to step down in the first place) related to his particular role as King, and Head of the Church of England? Would a prince or princess that was not heir apparent generate nearly as much controversy? I understand some of the second-born in other European countries have done so in modern times.

    Argument could be made that attitudes are different in Charles and Camilla's time? That being divorced is not looked down upon or seen as a threat to the monarchy as it was in George's time?

    Ms. Simpson's status as a divorcée was relevant in that His Majesty's Government would not and could not support their marriage, which is the impetus behind Edward VIII's abdication. It was the abdication itself that was the constitutional problem.

    Strangely the Royals are less worried about what an image such as the above one says about them and their views than they are about the pictures they are trying to ban.

    I voted Philip as well. He strikes me as someone who might accidentally flash someone in the hospital where some paparazzi will be hiding.
