Sounds like a typical Layer 8 incident.

Like an 8-layer dip? I'll get the tortilla chips.

If there's one thing the internet's taught me is that guns solve all problems. Shot the computer and it'll be working in no time at all. Literally no time.

    Not exactly. :p

I'm still perplexed by the fact the virus had mass. That and that backing up files is a mysterious and mystifying thing.

Well, apparently the whole Internet has as much mass as a strawberry, so it could be that the viruses have mass, too... :p

I guess that'd be an interesting thought experiment. Though a virus is nothing but lines of code cobbled together into nasty software, does that code have any measurable mass?

Just in case you've missed the point Arlol, you can't call something as ephemeral as software "huge". The adjective you were looking for would be any expletive of choice.

If your parents are willing to pay for it, I'm sure a data recovery service would sort it out.

Because of the idea that lines of code, data, and your favourite pornographic images all reduce down to charged or uncharged circuits... and at the lowest level the difference between their states is governed by an electron charge and electrons have mass. QED data, and viruses, have mass.

Now all you sarcastic people actually have learned that viruses have mass.

Well, I was just joking there, but if you were to seriously consider this concept, I suppose you could always argue that every line of code must have a physical medium upon which it's written - a hard drive or a memory stick... So the mass of that corresponding part of the physical medium could be, I suppose, considered as the code's mass. It's a bit of a stretch, though. :p

Data recovery services are very expensive. His parents might have to move to a cheaper trailer park afterwards.

My work computer got infected with a virus back in 2001. I couldn't help feeling dirty all day and it wasn't even my fault. At another job, we were all sent emails not to open any emails that ended in 'exe.' One of our consultants wanted to see what a computer virus looked like, so she opened the email and infected the server and all the interconnected computers.

Let me guess, you got a pop up saying your pc was vulnerable, and allowed a trial version of some antivirus program to be installed.

Yeah, he was on this site, then that's what happened. We had some problems before like you would click on your email, but then for some reason it would redirect you to another site.

*shrugs* It's possible. A lot of people will be less cautious opening/looking at something work releated vs. something that's, well, not.:p
