"The Great Divide". You watched it. You can't unwatch it.

I'd rather have a few fillers than a whole rushed season. [face_coffee]

Korra was originally only going to be a miniseries, wasn't it? My understanding was that they paced it faster because it might not have had the opportunity to continue.

What I really thought was faulty about the Great Divide was the ending of the episode. While there were clearly a lot of things wrong, it was cute to see Katara and Sokka's differences mirrored in the customs of the two tribes. Their time apart and eventual reconciliation was a sweet and familiar story for anyone with siblings. I'm simply not sure what everything else was about. Why the insistence that Aang "fix" everything, and his ham-fisted repetition of this point? Further, didn't this otherwise undermine the look at how intra-familial relationships usually play out (ie there is nothing to "fix?")? Worst of all, after the tribes had already been forced together at the end of the episode and came to a sort of understanding, Aang made up a contrived, stupid story that made them reconcile a second time in under five minutes. It was a salvageable episode that just. . .didn't get salvaged.

Even "Ember Island Players" trolled that episode [face_laugh]

Still, after having watched "the Avatar & the Firelord," it's clear that the Avatar learned his lesson in "the Fortuneteller"

I feel like I'm missing something. What is this connection between "Avatar & the Firelord" and "The Fortuneteller" that everyone keeps mentioning?

    The volcano.

Though, to be fair, there's a HUGE difference between some lava flowing down that Aang dealt with, and the chain of volcanic eruptions as an entire island self-destructed that Roku had to deal with.

I agree with Miana Kenobi about Asami. I figured she would just be a kind-of-annoying, very obvious block to Korra/Mako and really serve no other purpose. I'm glad they're fleshing her out as a character.

Dave Filoni has some super insightful thoughts on The Fortuneteller, as that was the last episode he did before he left Avatar for Clone Wars. I can't remember all of the specifics, but it was something about how this was one of Aang's first real trials and the volcano was symbolic of the Fire Lord in a way... I can't retell it like Dave, but it was enough to make all of us go:

Is it because of Roku's battle with a volcano, and / or Katara having quiet moments of realization after Aang defeats the volcano and the Firelord?

    Or am I missing something?

Avatar Roku, when confronted by an erupting volcano, marched right up to the (very toxic) peak.

Avatar Aang, when confronted by an erupting volcano, said “***** to that!” and simply diverted the lava away from the people.

That’s what I mean about “the Avatar and the Firelord” making “the Fortuneteller” brilliant in hindsight. Having died trying to fight a volcano, the next Avatar had enough sense to…y’know…not.

It's as Ann as the nose on Plain's face.

Got through my DVRed Korra run the other day. Not a bad followup. Someone I knew compared it (negatively) to The Phantom Menace. As far as sci-fi sequel reputations in the greater public go, I think it's more ST: The Next Generation than that.
