Well, he's right about one thing: I am conspiring to create a bloody revolution. But I'm not conspiring with Muslims, just with myself.

I can't facepalm harder than I already did. Otherwise I might end up ripping my face off.

 

Goldwater wasn't a segregationist, exactly. (He had helped desegregate the army, and had supported prior Civil Rights bills) However, he believed that private businesses should be allowed to discriminate if they wanted to. Do I think that's a good idea? Hell no. But I don't think the guy was a racist. More like a libertarian. He'd never survive in today's party. His politics, however, enabled racism to flourish. Goldwater was cool, though. He once said all Christians should kick Jerry Falwell's ass. That gets points in my book.
