i like your list rogue. i really gained an appreciation for rothko and mondrian after seeing some of their paintings in person. same with jackson pollock.

It's true. You see reproductions and digital copies, but there's no comparison to really standing in front of a work. There's a painting by Carlo Carra called The Funeral of the Anarchist Galli. I'd never liked it really . . . until I saw it in person. The vibrant colors, the incredible energy of it . . . none of it translated into the books I'd seen it in or the digital images of it. Rothko is a good example; seen in digital copies, his work kind of seems facile or simplistic. But the depth of those colors when you're standing right in front of them . . . amazing.

 

Do architects count - that is, count one add Frank Lloyd Wright?

it was really hard to leave "the crane wife" off my list. "mutations" and "sea change" are way up there too. too many honorable mentions to mention really. i could make a top 50 list and still struggle with leaving things off.
