How do machines get souls, though? Does c3po and r2d2 have souls?

Hey, I've had transmissions "groan" if not properly shifted. My car had feelings, too!

Seriously, though, programmed "feelings" are still just programmed responses to certain input. As to Guri, it's been so long since I've "encountered" her - wasn't she categorized as other than a droid?

    Wasn't she just considered "Android"?

She was a very advanced machine.
Having feelings does not mean has souls. Animals have feelings, but according to many Catholics, do not have souls.

How about mermaids? Han's Christian Anderson's mermaid has no soul- yet is able to aspire to one- and is pretty human otherwise.

Maybe droids (of the most intelligent type) can be thought of like that?

    First, define a soul.

A philosophical concept that beneath all the body, brain, and consciousness, there is an immaterial you. An immaterial essence that defines a person or animal, that if they die, lives on because their identity is not their consciousness, body, brain, but an immaterial being. Probably a spiritual substance, and sparkly glowy. Like obi wan.

Humans in star wars have souls. Their soul either transforms into the force and becomes part of the netherworld of the force or retains identity and lived forever. Where do you think obi wan, yoda, and darth vader's ghost came from? And qui gon, as mentioned in ROTS?

It's problematic to define souls in Star Wars; Qui-Gon/etc know a way to keep from becoming immaterial, but the underlying implication is that there isn't an afterlife, just re-absorption into the Force.

By your definition, then, though Artoo and Threepio are sparkly, I don't think they are on the inside. If they're destroyed, they do not live on. They become machine parts.

What I mean by sparkly, is that a ghost/soul is usually glowing with light.

If they're destroyed, they don't live on, then that means they have no souls, and therefore no counciousness and aren't sentinent.

    Agree?

So they have no more emotions than a computer?

Yes, that is correct. They just simulate emotions.

Uh, not stimulate, but simulate. Fake. Pretend. Appear to have. "Oh, my!" Sounds surprised, but is a programmed response to specific stimuli.
