Obviously the director will more or less be in charge of how the film turns out and how it ultimately flows and looks, but none of that will matter if Disney executives hand him a poorly written (or just not very good) script. Something they've done to directors before. Like any planned trilogy (Since that's the scheme behind every movie made now lets just stop calling them trilogies and start calling them "brands") these films will live or die by the strength of the story, plot, and characters in the first film. All things that are inexorably tied to how well written the script is.

Its possible they have someone on it right now but since we don't know that why not speculate? I'm not much of a writer so I don't really know who's who in the screenwriting realm, so I'd like to ask you guys: Who do you think would write a truly good Star Wars film? I know many directors also write story's and screenplays so you can nominate a director as well for the writing job.

Drew Karpyshyn has written some really great Star Wars material in books and for games the past few years. Depending on what direction they decide to take I'd be excited if they had him at least work out a the story if not write the entire screenplay. David Goyer did a great job with Batman Begins, an origin story that started off a great trilogy of movies. Who do you guys got?

Nobody that's been involved with the universe before, to begin with.

We'd get brow-arching in every other shot if Zahn writes.

Don't let EU writers near this trilogy. They are a blight on Star Wars.

David Benioff - author of City of Thieves and the Troy screenplay. May be too busy with Game of Thrones.

Frank Darabont should be involved, possibly as a script doctor.

Someone who respects the EU and can turn it into a reasonably good movie format.

I hate the Lord of the Rings with a passion, but, the writers for the LOTR movies did an excellent job of adapting the books into movies, keeping true to the books to the extent that you could with the constraints movies place on books. Yes, there were some things that were missing that irked a lot of fans (myself not being a fan, as previously stated, but being someone who was forced to read those awful books for high school English lit class), but the movies did a great job overall.

In honesty, Steven Moffat would have been perfect and he's worked with Kathleen Kennedy before on TinTin, but he's way too busy this next year with Doctor Who's 50th Anniversary and Sherlock series 3. Alas. I wonder how busy Neil Gaiman is.

Also, he might be busy writing the next two Bond films he's just signed up for, but John Logan could take a decent stab at it.

    Maybe Neil Gaiman?

Rian Johnson of "Looper" would be one name I'd like to throw into the ring. "Looper" is a deeply intelligent film, it's science fiction, and it's undeniably of the moment, fresh and new. And he's written excellent episodes of Breaking Bad and Terriers as well.

Been having a poke around on IMDB, and it seems that Kasdan's stuff hasn't been particularly well received.

None of the Eu writers, please.
They need a professional writer with a deep passion for the universe.
Don't really know the names of that many screenplay writers, so I won't throw anyone out.

Its really not that seriousa, all we need is lightsabers, bathas & starships & its Star Wars easy, I hope they bring in the wayne bross to write it, I like a lot of their movies.

Nooo they do not! The studio needs to hire fresh talent like the guys GL used on ANH, everyone involved needs to be new & untested. Only short resumes need to apply. Some of you people are going a little over board with how serious you about one movie in a franchise of many. Let the new industry talent earn their weight, Starwars is the best vehicle to that.

Tony Kushner. I mean, why not? Just keep Koepp and all the EU guys as far away from this as possible. Man, we should definitley get Stoppard, Sheppard, and Sayles on this thing too.
