    1. Big epic scale visual effects in 3D is not what drives people to theaters.

    2. Do not hang the success of your sci fi/fantasy epic on the shoulders of a child actor

    3. Do not pander to small children with cute for cuteness sake. Cute can misfire. It can be annoying. It can be jarring. It can be jar-jarring.

    4. Story matters.

    5. Having characters that people can like and relate to matters

    6. Find a writer with a sense of humor.

    7. Give your actors room to act. Collaborate with them in the acting process.

    8. Don't have the same guy who oversees the budget, the licensing, the merchandising also oversee the creative process.

    Anything else?

    Capable? Certainly.

Whether they have or not is another question entirely.

The main lesson of John Carter is "spend more than $5 in marketing efforts for your movie".

I agree with JoinTheSchwarz, I think the downfall of John Carter was the mess of a marketing campaign. It was a solid movie with terrible advertising making it out to be a completely different movie than it was. Heck I don't remember seeing more than a handful of tv commercials.

I think they should just avoid the 3d.

Avatar bombed because people don't want to see big 3D special effects adventures.

The point is that Disney won't be making these decisions, any more than they were making decisions on Avengers. That was Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige and Joss Whedon.

Like Titanic, Avatar succeeded because it was a character-driven piece that just happened to have a backdrop requiring a massive visual effects budget. This is why Cameron would be perfect for Star Wars.

I'm pretty sure that was sarcasm.

There's a big difference in filming in 3D, focusing your time, efforts, and money to make those CGI effects look breathtaking and amazing in both 2D and 3D, and doing a post-conversion to 3D. Heck some of the films that were shot in 3D (like Pirates 4) really didn't need to be. Unless the 3D is part of the movie (like Avatar), then it's just the movie studio wanting more money.

I thought everyone agreed that the last thing we need is a new Star Wars trilogy modeled on the prequels.

The prequels and the original trilogy have the exact same formula. The last thing we need is some short-sighted conscious effort to make them the anti-Prequels.

Yeah? I'll bet that's all it said. "John Carter" which frankly sounds like a movie about a football player or something.

I would say that "The Avengers" proves Disney can do this.

Pretty much all those issues were remedied when Lucas stepped down.

My take is John Carter failed because it was so bad it was impossible to tell apart from a Star Wars prequel. I know Disney has fired some of the people responsible for John Carter, and that's a good thing. My concern with Lucasfilm is that they're still too steeped in the corporate culture created by GL to make anything that's really better than Red Tails or TPM.

As much as I didn't love Avengers, if there were any way to put Star Wars into the hands of the Marvel unit, I would do that. I think the Marvel folks could make an incredible Star Wars movie. Keep ILM and the technical stuff. But Lucasfilm needs to be torched.

What was your big issue against The Avengers (that I presume you wouldn't want to see in E7)?
