Speculation What are the odds Disney will decide to just do a complete reboot?

What are the odds Disney will decide to just do a complete reboot of SW? Like what they did with Spiderman, for example.

I think anything is possible, but with Lucas filling a consultant role, I doubt a reboot would happen. I think a sequel trilogy (VII-IX) is most likely, with the story taking place chronologically after ROTJ. Beyond that, Disney will likely explore other time periods in SW mythology, and I think stand-alone movies (as opposed to trilogies) are most likely for those.

That being said, as much as I don't want to see a reboot of the OT, I have to admit that I would be curious to see how they would redo the early life of Anakin (PT) and the whole "Tragedy of Darth Vader" motif if a reboot was in order.

I love these times. So much speculation.

Nobody will "reboot" any of Lucas's films while he is still alive. Disney/LFL made it very clear in their statement of intent that this deal and the future films are all about building on what Lucas has done, not remaking it.

With Lucas involved a total reboot is highly unlikely. A Star Trek-style passing of the torch, on the other hand....

Disney didn't reboot Spider-man, Sony still has the rights to make Spider-man movies, so they're the ones who decided to do that.

And I believe Fox still has the rights to the original six Star Wars, so, someone correct me if I'm wrong, Disney can't make a reboot without their permssion.

through baseless and idyllic speculation we have come to the conclusion that a reboot is impossible

I don't think so. There is no need to. They can easily create a story about all new characters without rebooting the existing characters.

Very slim; I have absolutely no idea why people have this misconception that, with the purchase of Lucasfilm, Disney now directly controls the SW franchise, because they don't. Lucasfilm is going to remain a viable, autonomous company which will retain direct control over the SW franchise; Disney has simply added the company to its already-extensive 'corporate umbrella'. Kathleen Kennedy remains the person in charge of the SW franchise, and any decisions made with regards to the overall landscape and tapestry of the franchise will be made by her, not by her bosses. They may give her ideas and suggestions, but if she doesn't personally think those suggestions and ideas are worth pursuing, they won't be pursued.

Agreed. Why reboot the existing characters when there are 20,000 years of galactic history to play with?

"Idyllic speculation" aside (whatever that may be, exactly), Fox retains the rights to the original six films. The official word is that Episode VII will be an original story. Either of those facts taken individually indicate there will be no reboot in the foreseeable future. Taken together it's an iron-clad conclusion.

^ Fox retains the distribution rights to the existing films, which means that Disney and Lucasfilm cannot and will not have anything to do with the distribution and (re)release of said films until at least 2020 for Episodes V, VI, I, II, and III, and cannot and will not ever have anything to do with the distribution and (re)release of Episode IV unless some type of arrangement can be worked out.

I believe Disney/Lucasfilm will try to please both: Fans who want to see a direct sequel as well as moviegoers who would prefer some kind of reboot.
I think they will do Episode VII - IX as direct sequels as well as seperate movies that stand on their own and are set in different times and which are not related to the saga. Maybe even another trilogy set thousands of years in the past or future.
This way they could please both target audiences.

So if Fox retains right to the original six, that means all future re-releases of the original six will still be under the Fox banner and they will still have the Fox fanfrare?

But how does this work out when the whole thing is complete and LFL want to release the nine (or even twelve) films as one complete box set? Would they be released on a joint Fox/Disney ticket with both companies splitting the distribution costs/profits?

Any Die Hard boxed set represents a joint venture between Disney and Fox.

My guess is that, as things stand now, there will never be a complete box set of all the movies, but a lot of things can change between now and when they would be contemplating a twelve movie box set.

I remember a time when pictures of vomiting women on a discussion board for kids' adventure movies would have been strictly forbidden.

BTW, idyllic means "pleasing or picturesque in natural simplicity". It is not an adjective that can be sensibly applied to "speculation".

Iron-clad means "rigid or exacting; inflexible; unbreakable". It is perfectly sensible to modify the noun "conclusion".

Unless some type of deal is worked out, the only films that we will see released by Disney are this new Sequel Trilogy, whatever other films they choose to release as part of the SW franchise and brand, and, beginning in 2020, Episodes V, VI, I, II, and III. Until 2020, however, FOX retains distribution rights to the entire existing Saga, meaning that the Disney purchase of Lucasfilm has absolutely no affect whatsoever on the forthcoming 3-D re-releases of Episodes II-VI and will not have any affect whatsoever on any future releases of the films in the Saga between now and 2020.

A complete, 9-film box set released solely by Disney and Lucasfilm is an impossibility unless, as noted, some type of deal is worked out between Disney, Lucasfilm, and Fox because, although the distribution rights to Episodes V, VI, I, II, and III will, as noted, revert to Disney in 2020, the distribution rights to Episode IV will remain with Fox in perpetuity, meaning that said rights will never expire.

So, you'd prefer him to use an avatar with Anakin burning to death, then? I'm sure he could pull that off...

I wasn't born when the OT was released in theaters the first time and I was just getting into Star Wars when episode I was about to be released into theaters. My point is I've never got to do this speculation thing. I got to hear the crazy things people thought were going to be in the movies only after they were released. So this is a pretty exciting time for me because now I get to be apart of the talk!

Anyway, I don't think they will reboot the series.

If I had a dollar for ever time Lucas has changed his mind about what will and won't happen with Star Wars....well I'd have a few hundred bucks extra. People seem to forget the man is human, humans are fickle. We change our minds about what we want to do all the time throughout the course of our lives. Especially artists/writers. I dated a painter (ie fine art) trust me on that.

My opinion on there being a reboot....I'd saw the odds are approximately 3,720 to 1

I'll leave it up to the mods, of course, whom I've notified, but since you asked:

A picture of known and documented prosthetic make-up effects, of a subject well known to the fanbase who make up the members of this forum, and taken from a PG-13 movie, is not a violation of the terms of service.

A picture of an actual vomiting woman, taken from what looks to be a Japanese emetophiliac porno movie, is a violation of the TOS.

    lol wait, what?

are you saying that speculation can't be described in the context of "simple" and, pay close attention, "care free?"

is this english 055? i was disputing the diction, not the grammar. in layman's terms that means your assertions of iron-clad conclusions just might be a bit premature. the reality is that my post went completely over your head - there's no need to be all defensive and petulant about it

If the sequels are are successful? Fairly good, I think.

    I hope so, anyways.
