    Kyber Crystal

    Whills

    Starkiller

Female lead (Little person lead done in Willow)

Any other concepts that could be recycled and how? In the PT we had Mace Windu/Utapau/air whales

There is a bunch of stuff in the Annotated Screenplays. For example, Han Solo was supposed to be a green gilled alien.

And then there was a cool opening sequence where a spaceship crash lands on Tatooine and there is a father (jedi) with 2 sons inside. And they start off on a journey and encounter a Sith in the desert.

That was basically used in TPM, Qui-Gon and Anakin encountering Maul in the desert

Maybe we will finally see who and what the Whills are, not just the teasing vague reference they got in ROTS

Also used in the PT was the idea of a decoy princess/queen, and the term "padawaan" for an apprentice

I always liked this bit from the end of the second draft of ANH:
    The Starkiller would once
    again spark fear in the
    hearts of the Sith knights,
    but not before his sons
    were put to many tests...
the most daring of which was
    the kidnapping of the Lars
    family, and the perilous
    search for:
    "THE PRINCESS OF ONDOS."

Similar to the EU concept, yes. It was something needed for the main hero to focus the Force. A MacGuffin.

Basically the MacGuffin got transferred from the Kaiburr crystal to the droids/death star plans.

How about the Legions of Lettow and Dai Bendu being used? the names have been used fleetingly in the EU, I always kind of liked the sound of them

Cos Da****, Crispin Hoedaack, Aquilae, Granicus, Baltarian, Vantos Coll, to name a few, and my personal favorite: 'Bum-Bum Extract"....I mention these because a lot of names that made it into the PT were from the ANH rough drafts

Kyber crystal is the obvious one for me. Ties into the force, is a little mystical and a great, simple mcguffin.

There's a nice book that might help here: The Secret History of Star Wars. There's also a website.

The Kyber crystal was used in TCW as a crystal that could be joined with a holocron and documented the names of all known Force users in the galaxy

The PT & TCW pretty much used that side of GL up. I doubt Disney's gonna go for some crazy, deeply mythological, surreal take on SW. This is gonna be really safe stuff. But I personally love the proto-SW, the PT, TCW etc. But that's winding down, as the commercial SW emerges again.

One of my fav moments playing LOTOR2 was finding the Kaiburr Crystal after looting the corpse of a Sith Lord as I am old enough to have gotten and read Splinter of the Mind's Eye when it was first published.

What's wrong with a McGuffin? Worked just fine for the Death Star plans. Not saying you have to have one but I can't see what is inherently bad about having one - depends on the execution.

It was never explicitly stated in the movie, but qui-gon learned how to maintain his identity after death ie become a force ghost from a shaman of the Whills. It was mentioned in the shooting script and novelization. There was supposed to be a scene of yoda talking to qui-gon that was ultimately not filmed, and qui-gon reveals he learned the secret from a shaman of he Whills

My definition of a MacGuffin would be an item that serves no purpose in the plot other than to motivate the characters to acquire it. The Death Star plans served a causal purpose in the plot by allowing the rebels to know the weakness of the Death Star.
