The white folk to black folk ratio is pretty staggering. Unless Lucas hired all minorities to be cast as those aliens, then there is some pretty blatant discrimination goin down. You cats know I'm right, look at these films. Except for Mace Weedu & Lando Coruscant, how many other brothers can you name?

I mean, the only other black dude I can think of is Vader and then they took his mask off and BAM, he's WHITE! That was a black voice for almost 3 movies and then they gotta go and take that away from us too at the very end. So, why aren't there more brothers in the SW universe?

Exactly brother, Black Brothers in Star Wars are like the Red Shirts in Star Trek.

    Not Cool.

For the same reason you don't see more of them starring in other big name films, I expect.

Well, after the original trilogy, there's been a lot more diversity in that essence.

However, one of the things about Star Wars aliens is that most of them are humanoid. They have a torso, legs, arms, and a head on the top. Yeah, there may be multiple arms/heads/fingers/etc, but they still have that same structure as a human.

There's only a few aliens in ratio to the whole that aren't humanoid and are sentient.

We've seen a lot of black people. We've only seen like one Asian.
And anyways, black people and white people and blah are all human! If we want diversity, we have to think of how come in every continuous story so far there have been human main characters?

Besides, I could imagine the main characters of the originals and prequels to be non-white or black. It doesn't really affect the story.

However, the actors, regardless of race, they chose, looked the part.

Not only in Star Wars. This is the case in nearly all space fantasy movies and series. Did you ever watch an episode of Star Trek?

There were very few female Jedi. The Jedi Order was sexist. If not, why were most Jedi men?

This is not true. The movies featured male Jedi heavily but in reality, the Jedi Order was pretty well split. Def not sexist. The movies happened to be about a group of Force-sensitive men but there are many women.

You are the one discrimining people by the colour of their skin, not Lucas.

3 of the 6 movies are over 30 years old.The 3 more recent ones are far higher in ethnic group representation, so if assume you're just talking about the first 3 films made then course there's going to be a large difference between the number of white european/americans and the number of ethic minorities.
You can watch most any other mainstream film made in the 70s and 80s and ask exactly the same thing and it is the same thing. Films made were largely aimed at white people, scfi particularly, so white actors were usually used just out of bad habit, unless they needed a token black guy character. It's not intentional racism by anyone at Lucasfilm, rather the reflection of a wider Hollywood problem which it can be argued still exists today, although on less of a scale.

As for the prequels- lets see now. Luke and Leia are siblings, both white so their parents need to be white. Obi-Wan needs to be white cause he was white in the first films too. So the three main characters already have their ethnicity controlled by the first 3 films rather than any deliberate "we need more white people!" stance, hence no black main character.

    two main issues here:

    1. there are many ethnic minorities in star wars, if you look hard enough

    2. the Jedi order being sexist, ooooooooohhh dear, was a time when waving a sword was you know a man's job

oh dear I made the first [politically incorrect statement in this thread

    the universe will implode..

I was not trying to be racist. I was just asking a question on the name of that character. Misunderstanding.
