Anyone know anything about the rest of the election aside from the run for the White House? Estimates and polls on how many seats either party may lose/pickup?

According to 538, the Senate is most likely staying Democratic with around the same number of seats that they have now. While, in the House the Republicans might lose some seats but still hold a majority.

It's crap like this that makes me think that much of the GOP are actually atheists and liars and worship nothing more than money while giving atheists like me a bad name(or would if they admitted it):

Ryan= Obama is a threat to the Judeo-Christian values that America was founded upon

How many goddamned times does this bull need to be shot down? The Founding Fathers signed a treaty that said they in no way founded this country on said religious values. Yet it gets repeated over and over. Why? Liars. Charlatans.

It gets repeated over and over in order to beat it into people's heads, so that they don't question it, and so that their opponents have a very difficult time of trying to uproot those big lies.

It looks like Maine voters are poised to (re-)legalize same sex marriage. This would leave Rhode Island as the only New England state without same sex marriage.

thats kind of shocking and encouraging to think about, terr!

VLM i wish you'd stop implying the only source of morality is belief and all atheists are liars. self-hating atheism is... weird...

you told me you were voting for peta lindsay :(

seriously tho i cant just cut ties with people simply because they have bad political opinions. especially because in america, from my perspective, nearly everyone has bad political opinions to varying degrees.

the effect of my socialism works both ways in this regard. it confuses conservatives. they have a hard time putting me in a box when i tell them im a socialist and, as a socialist, i dislike obama, because their sources of information keep harping that obama is a socialist (haha). so they usually just kind of let it drop. "liberals" arent threatened by my opposition to them either because they see me as politically irrelevant. even so, they tend to come to me for advice for arguments with THEIR conservative friends (in fact, my sister just called me about an argument she's been having about the benghazi manufactured-outrage)... as ever, democrats have a clearer picture of reality, but their political consciousness is far too narrow

there's much more to human chemistry and camaraderie than ideology, and honestly american politics can barely be called ideological conflict at this point, its more like a bitter sports rivalry in terms of the behavior and knowledge-base of the electorate and also in terms of the changes ACTUALLY at stake

all this to say, i think its sad that you ended a good date early because of silly partisan american presidential politics. even beyond my oddball republican companion, i find meaningful human connections with radically politically mistaken individuals all the time. just this past weekend, i entrusted my dog for a few days with a couple who love her like their own (probably take better care of her than i do) and whom i might take dancing tonight (they're a couple of fox news tea partiers), i worked an eight hour shift with one of my favorite coworkers, (a former hippy-turned ron paul libertarian), and i danced some incredible sets with a mormon romney-supporter whom i have serious dance chemistry with and with whom i had a serious (if not exactly heated) discussion about abortion rights just a couple weeks back (the severely sexually-repressed make some of the most sensual dancers, btw :p )

my life would be much poorer if i banished any of these individuals from my life simply because, like most americans, they disagree with me politically. and what would i accomplish in the process?

take it from me, one of the fiercest, TOS-skirtingest jerks on here: people dont change their political opinions because some angry dude yelled at them, or even disagreed with them at length and martialed a bunch of UNDENIABLE FACTS at them. they just dont. humans arent that rational. some of us are more convinced we are than others, but oftentimes those ************* are even more driven by spite and pride than the rest of us, (im sure if you've been posting on here long you can think of some such *************). i think its far more common that people change their political opinions because someone from a particular ideology or party became important to them AND THAT left them open to a new worldview

i think this is an important post for me to make, btw, in the face of the election tomorrow because i know many of you will encounter people "from the other side" who are going to be very upset or very excited in the wake of the election and i hope you have the sense to let them have their petty, fleeting emotions and see past that to the worthwhile person underneath [:D]

That's what youth is for: trying on ideologies like suits of clothing, seeing what fits. I had many friends like that in high school and college -- people who adopted the political viewpoints of whomever they happen to be standing closest to, hopefully eventually working through to their own political viewpoints. I get to watch that now with my son's high school friends, getting a sense of what it must have been like before my belief system calcified and started to petrify.

Well, just that I generally tend to agree. I get along with all sorts of people, and though some views may tell you something about a person, I still think at base people ought to be judged by who they are and not what they think.

i also get along with all sorts of people when i care to. the difference being that for me, the internet is not one of those times.

when i argue on the internet, its for fun or to grandstand for people reading the thread. i seldom if ever argue to change the other discussant's mind on the internet. when i am, you'll know it by my kinder, gentler methodology, closer to the tone i would take in a disagreement with a coworker or a person i met in a bar.

i think there's a degree of truth here too but part of it is the smug superiority of the elderly. like people constantly insisting that a given generation is less moral/more lazy/etc than their own was. its mostly confirmation bias and a refusal to accept youth culture. but yes, youths are inherently transient

however, what im trying to describe is a bit more universal and ive absolutely seen it in people much older than me

I'll be voting at the ***-crack of dawn tomorrow. I'm hoping that the 2008 trend holds and most people have voted early.

Obama winning North Carolina will depend on urban voters vs rural voters.

Rogue, please tell me this is the woman you were referring to when announcing your election day plans. I'm not sure I can contemplate the alternative.

I just watched the end of both his and Romney's speeches. Obama's closing statement was powerful and passionate. Romney's was.... not so much.

The last campaign event of his own political career. The next time he does a rally, it will be for the 2014 midterm elections, and after that, it will be for the next Democratic nominee for President.

Because if you repeat a lie often enough, a number of people who are either stupid or unread will think its the truth.

Which reminds me....pro wrestling? Totally real.

EDIT -- My official position is that no matter who wins....we really aren't going to see any real changes in any policy. Obama and Romney are too much alike.

Louisiana is going to stay majority red....Orleans and Jefferson Parishes are the only two that ever really go blue at any time.

So thus, I intend to vote for...one of the other nine. There are 11 folks running for Pres. on our ballot. Might as well throw a bone to them.

Would be hilarious to see the Louisiana results with one candidate only getting one vote. :p

Well, Obama did try to get health care within reach of people who aren't extremely affluent. That's a violation of modern, ahem, "Judeo-Christian values" right there.
