disclaimer: i say this having not seen most bond films including all the connery ones so bite me i guess

 

So, if a reboot is a reboot because it disregards previous movie events and meetings, what is Skyfall?
There are numerous references in it to previous movies Craig was not in.

 

Well, in the interest of continuity, at least one of his best acting moments comes as a reference to OHMSS (telling Anya to STHU about Tracy).

Coming from someone who has seen all of the films many many times, I agree. Or, rather, it's my favourite. OHMSS and FRWL vie for the position of being the best films in the canon.

Something about the alchemical mix of TLD just bloody well works. Exploding milk bottles and John Terry inclusive.

 

I wouldn't call TLD the best or my favorite, but it's darn close to both.

 

It's never worked for me: too silly to be the gritty serious take Dalton's Bond was suited to, but not spectacular or fun enough to be really good as an over-the-top action flick. License to Kill, on the other hand, worked much better for Dalton, imo, and is one of my favourites.

 

I agree. While I loved LTK, TLD has always left me cold, no matter how good Dalton as Bond was.

Sure... for the benefit of the audience. Just because there's reference to an exploding pen and ejecting people from their car seats doesn't mean that the original Bond run is suddenly in-continuity with the post-Casino Royale series, however. Especially since Skyfall's ending explicitly sets up the familiar "M/Moneypenny/hat stand" status quo of the originals as Craig!Bond's future, rather than his past.

That being said, Craig!Bond had already experienced his own version of GoldenEye's events, if the Wii version of the game is to be believed.

 

Well I watched Quantum of Solace, completing my run of the James Bond film canon.

It was...pretty meh. I still love Craig, though having Quantum be the villain in the middle and then switch to Greene who was NEVER good, was definitely not smart. The film absolutely falls apart at the end, like they had too many ideas and wouldn't just focus in on one. A middling effort, though I'd definitely watch it sooner than the sea of **** that is Moore's films.

What was up with the gunbarrel at the end? I liked how it was integrated into the movie for Casino Royale, but why put it at the end there?

 

That's not where it's assets lay. I like the intrigue, the fact that Bond is being manipulated into being a patsy (not unlike FRWL and FYEO), but also the fact that Bond himself is manipulating Kara and basically messing with her head.

I love LTK as well, but the cheapness is overt, and some of Glen's schtick just doesn't fit in with the tone.

That being said it does still function around the fascinating idea of Bond without MI6 getting in way over his head and relying on the Bond girl to save him. Which is the reason that Pam is the only true realisation of the "Bond has met his match" crap that EON seem to posit every second film.

 

Yeah the scenes they wrote or rewrote for Dalton are fantastic - how ice cold a bastard is he with Pushkin, in the latter's hotel room? Or after the death of Saunders?

The film suffers because of the the common theme that caused Bond films to suffer - Mooreitis.

 

Newspaper article today claiming Craig had said he was fed-up of doing Bond and tried to get out of doing the role before Skyfall.

Seems odd, every TV interview I've seen of him he says how much he likes doing it and how honoured he is to be a part of the franchise.


Regarding the Quantum organisation in QoS, was it resolved who they were and who was in charge of them? I've seen the film maybe once since it was in the cinema and I find the plot a bit too wayward to remember everything that went on. It seemed as though Quantum was going to be the new SPECTRE, yet no mention of it was in Skyfall at all.

 

From what I can recall from what I THINK they were trying to do in QoS, they're an international....terror? organization that works to destabilize governments when somebody else pays them to. There are a bunch of people who are high ups who Bond revealed at that play. But Greene was trying to hold onto the water supply for some Bolivian town....and was trying to do something with that one general to put him back into power. It was all very unclear.

Saw it. It was fantastic. Expectations met.

Visually speaking, I couldn't get enough of the climax. The silhouettes against the burning house was basically art.

It appears the writer(s) learned from the example of TDK and villains very well.
