Oh they'll be $$$. Probably not "blockbuster" though. Star Wars is gonna be just another "that's still around?" franchise. They'll release movies, a good portion will see them but the fanbase will be broken, there won't be a solid core to help them through tough times. So then in 15 years we'll have the inevitable reboot/retelling of the entire Saga just like "Planet of the Apes" "Robocop""Star trek" "Total Recall."

It's a pattern in Hollywood: Create good film->Sequel/Prequel the hell out of it till everyone rolls their eyes and $ goes down->REBOOT/REMAKE!!!!!!

Star Wars 7 won't underperform as badly as TRON: Legacy, however. John Carter failed - okay, but John Carter is a bunch of little-known pulp novels from waaaay back. TRON is an example of a broken fanbase. It did not live up to its repuation.

One should remember that the word 'fan' is a contraction of 'fanatic'!

I have had to link the Wiki article on Star Wars Canon to these forums several times recently, because people were posting claims that were far wide of the fact. That article was just an easy Google-search away!

To me, a true fan would really know their subject.

This. They might consult the EU to see what has been done before, but if they want to go a certain direction with a character, death or losing a limb in some EU novel from 15 years ago is not going to stop them. EU authors have always known their stories might get contradicted down the road. This isn't going to be a sudden stake through their hearts. It is what it is.

A true fan would know that an "official canon policy" is code language for "guys, please buy our tie-in material, it totally matters!"

Surprising, as they weren't that far off SW, as I recall - just planet bound. Was it badly made?

Well, the original did come out in the days when real computers weren't kept at home....

Some Star Wars was inspired by John Carter, actually.

Also, issue 53 of the Marvel SW comic was an open homage/ripoff of John Carter.

Part of the reason I became interested in John Carter. Read a great WIRED article that educated me on John Carter's significance.

The Marvel #53 ref to John Carter is really good. I just re-read #53 & #54 earlier this year too.

BTW - If everyone wants, I'll come up with a cool explanation to fit Splinter of the Mind's Eye with ESB too! It will be really gnarly.

I think you're missing the point. Loudly and clearly. We're not talking about inclusion of EU content. The point is that if the filmmakers have a good idea, they shouldn't NOT do it simply because it would contradict EU. Deciding on whether to do an original plot based on whether it will be consistent with a 1996 short story is a bad move for a filmmaker.

This thread caused me to download the Barsoom omnibus. It's old enough to be public domain. Thanks guys.
