I've only read the book as well, along with Wookieepedia entries, and watched the Timeline videos before they were cancelled. I personally have to say he's easily one of the most successful Sith. I'd say the 3rd most successful, after Sidious and Krayt. (This is not the same as me saying he's the 3rd Greatest, just in case anyone's wondering) Conquering half the galaxy says a lot, and he put the appropriate amount of planning into everything he did. I tend to find myself siding more with Sith who plan things out and then strike suddenly from the shadows, as they seem to have the most success. Planning and patience goes a long way, and I think its when a Sith is able to master these two things that he can attain mastery of himself and his power.

Yeah the planet thing...IDK, you have Sidious ripping holes in the fabric of space, and he did do something similar to the people of Byss if I remember correctly. I'm not so much against it, as I don't think its was needed for the Sith Emperor's story. It really just feels like they needed to establish him as a Big Bad, so they chose the easier path of having him do some over the top thing, instead of building him up with smaller but substantial victories and actions. And really I just don't understand why they had to make him so...perfect I guess? Like he was this awesome dude from the start. I think the character of Darth Krayt was handled better.

Completely agree about your planning and patience views, could be why I like Sith of the Bane lineage who slowly built up power over a thousand years waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

Patience also was a major factor in the rise of Darth Krayt.

It seems patience is an important virtue for a Sith.

Ok I'm now intrigued. What with Kev's excellent essay, Sinrebirth's command to educate me and now your own endorsement of Darth Krayt I feel I need to know more about him. What book should I start with?

The Trade Paperbacks of the Legacy comics, I would recommend. He does cameo elsewhere in novel(s) set before, but the best start would be Legacy as it is about his Order outright.

    And please, call me Sinre.

The legacy series is amazing for a lot of reasons. But yeah the handling of the Sith story was very well done.

    And call me maybe.

    I hate you all!

Oh and apprentice I want you to write me a Character Sheet. Marks will be given for how well thought your character is-> not so much every single piece of background history thought of, but rather an interesting character who has both talents and weaknesses/faults. Detail is good too though, the more the better. If you draw a picture of them, a max of 5 additional extra points will be available on top of the 10. Also bare in mind you are an apprentice, not Lord Palpatine. You will not know how to drain an entire planet of life. There's no time limit- I'd rather you take as much time you need than have a rushed character in my hands. Please use the current format and add any additional categories you feel are necessary:

Dark-Fox yeah that's why I prefer Bane's Order. Not that I didn't like what Exar Kun and Revan were doing. Its simply that for the most part its been shown time and again that the Sith can't win that way, and there's never a good reason to make yourself an obvious target. Take the time to carefully plan every possible detail, weaken your enemy, and strike when the time is right and your victory is assured.

And as my Master said, the Legacy comics are the way to go. They cover Krayt during his time as a Sith Lord. Real shame there isn't an omnibus for the series yet.

Edit: It's really hard not to cross the line from brief summary into fanfic. I think I crossed that line :( I deliberately left the ending vague as I don't know what era you want this set in Darth Helinith.

Please read the name Iras as you would irascible.

    Name: Iras Jasra

    Species: Zygerrian
    Gender: Male
    Home Planet: Zygerria
    Age: 13

    Personality: Scheming and ambitious
    Height: 1.6 meters
    Eye Colour: Yellow
    Fur: Red and light brown
    Skin Colour: N/A
Scars/Tattoos: Shock Whip scar around left wrist

    Biography:
Despite being born the only child to a mid-level merchant class family on Zygerria, ambitious Iras Jasra decided at an early age not to continue in his parents' footsteps into the highly competitive slave industry. Instead, he'd set his sights on greater things.

Growing up force-sensitive on Zygerria wasn't easy for young Iras. Despite the taboo against enslavement of their own species, many wealthy noble clans would pay a great deal to posess a forceful individual because of the power owning such a being would confer. Knowing this, Iras's parents went to great lengths to control almost every aspect of his life lest he inadvertently reveal the secret of his gift whilst using his powers of precognition and telepathy for their own gain.

Possesing few friends, Iras led a lonely life of virtual slavery. The one true friend he had came in the form of a kindly clan elder who made the cool detatchment of his parents easier to bear. Having a trace of the force within her, she became Iras's mentor, teaching him basic control skills and, more importantly, the ways of the universe. The lesson he took most to heart was that he shouldn't allow others to dictate his own life.

After all, he held the power.

By the time he reached adolescence at age ten, Iras was determined not to let others walk over him. Biding his time and cultivating a number of allies from rival merchant clans with promises of consolidation when he comes of age, Iras waited for the opportunity to get away from Zygerria for good and discover the power his family lacked.

That time came three years later. Manipulated by Iras who played on his father's greed, they arrived un-escorted near Zyg space port where a slave ship had just landed. Hoping to force Iras to use a mind trick on a rival slave trader and steal the slaves for himself, Iras's father was shocked by how events actually played out.

The rival trader turned out to be a contact of Iras and in on his scheme. At a nod from Iras, the trader drew his blaster and fired upon the elder Jasra who took a baster bolt to the knee whislt finding cover. Calling for the guards in his employ who came running from the slave ship, the rival trader had the wounded Zygerrian pinned down and calling his own guards.

Using the chaos as a distraction, Iras boarded the transport ship whose hull was still crammed with collared slaves and prepared for launch. Not being a trained pilot, the ill-prepared youngster had overlooked the last stage of his plan - the actual getaway.

Realizing they'd both been betrayed, the two traders and their guards outside turned their weapons on the ship, hoping to disable it before it could launch.
Having only two choices the second of which being surrender, Iras with rising fear promised freedom to any slave that could pilot them away from Zygerria. The pilot turned out to be a Selkath whose digits flew over the control panels, hoping to coax the blaster-battered ship off the ground.

Meanwhile, Iras's father had managed to board by blasting the hatch's loading ramp control and used his shock whip on his son just as the slave transport was finally taking off. With the whip coiled painfully about his wrist almost incapacitating him with it's electrical pulses, Iras dug deeply into the force, using his emotion to unleash a screaming force-push that sent his dad flying off the ramp to the ground receding below.

Drained, his wrist scarred and raw from the rapid uncoiling of the shock whip during the push, Iras Jasra headed to the cockpit and an uncertain future just as his new pilot broke atmosphere and prepared to jump to hyperspace.

    Ship: Zygerrian Slave Ship
    Lightsaber: None yet
Other Weapons: Zygerrian Stun Pike found in ship
Force Powers: Push, mind trick and telepathy

I have completed my first essay, Rambo.

The Rule of Two is one of the foremost guiding philosophies of the Sith Lords throughout the 1000-year period beginning around the time of the Ruusan Reformation and coming to an end shortly after the Clone Wars before being phased out of use and succeeded by Darth Krayt's far less successful Rule of One. But to understand the foundation of the Rule of Two, one must also understand the events that immediately proceeded it.

The once-glorious Sith Empire was on the decline as the New Sith Wars raged on between the Jedi Army of Light and the Sith Brotherhood of Darkness, preventing the Sith from obtaining a strong foothold in the galaxy. A turning point would come during a final battle on planet Ruusan, in which the Jedi Lord Hoth led his fellow Jedi against Sith Lord Kaan and his army. It soon became clear to Kaan that the battle could not be won through the Sith's sheer power and valor alone, and he and his men chose to use a thought bomb which decimated both armies. The war for all intents and purposes was over, but the Sith were virtually destroyed.

There was, however, a man who understood that the Order of the Sith Lords itself would have to undergo sweeping changes and adaptions to reclaim their rightful place as rulers of the Galaxy. Darth Bane, the sole Dark Side survivor of the fateful conflict on Ruusan, set the foundations for rebuilding the Sith Lords via a doctrine from the Revan days he resurrected dubbed the Rule of Two. As the name suggests the Rule of Two allots for only two Sith Lords at any given time, a master and an apprentice. There were a number of benefits from the new doctrine, chief among them being that the Dark Side would never again be spread thin amongst a massive empire that would inevitably have competition and infighting within, and in the meantime the Order could gradually rebuild itself in secrecy all the while sowing the seeds of destruction in the Republic. Every master would be replaced by his apprentice once said apprentice grew powerful enough to overthrow his master.

I personally find the Rule of Two to be a rather effective means to an end, and given the result it produced (the Empire) I am inclined to believe it ultimately did as it was intended. Despite the fact that a long millennium was required for the Order to grow strong enough and finally reveal itself anew to the Galaxy, it succeeded in keeping the few remaining Sith Lords secret from their enemies in the Jedi Order and allowed them to gradually damage the Republic until it was ripe for the plucking (so to speak) and indeed it did just that with the rise of Darth Sidious and his subsequent founding of the Galactic Empire which would prove to be one of the most stable and effective galactic organizations founded by the Sith.

Ultimately it is arguable that had the Rule of Two not given the Sith Lords an air of secrecy and concealment no Sith Lord could have been able to so effectively hide from his enemies and disable them simultaneously, therefore giving rise to a great Empire in the process. It is for that very reason that I conclude this essay by commending the visionary Darth Bane and his foresight in reviving such a simple but deadly effective Rule.

I am planning the two other essays now. The second will be centered around the aforementioned Rule of One and its similarities and differences to the Rule of Two but also its inherent weaknesses. The third will cover a slightly different topic in the Rule of Strong.

Oh, and could I have an assignment regarding Darth Maul next time Rambo? Thanks.

Nice charcater, Dark Lord's Daughter. I'm impressed by " Helinith entered a crippling depression during which she mourned the loss of her friend and thought long and hard over her future. However, with the help and friendship of Darth Mal, she is slowly overcoming her grief." Difficult to roleplay I imagine, hope not inspired by real life events
I guess that format of charcater sheet is what you had in mind when you set me this task, wish I'd seen that before I started waffling on in my abridged fanfic sheet

I like the new avatar, even more Sithy than the last! Is that your kitty?

Have I just levelled up from Peon to Apprentice? Is that what the point system is all about?

Do you Sith Lords miss being given challenges? I mean, do you wish your apprentices asked things of you to make your days more interesting? I'd hate to think we learners are having all the fun!

Sinre trained me in the ways of the dark side way back in the days of old aka 3 years ago or so. That makes you his grand-apprentice of sorts. And yes I would say you're now an apprentice.

The depression wasn't really inspired by any life events, she just gets overly attached to people. Bit too clingy, doesn't have much self confidence. So a little bit like me, but at the same time she's a bit braver and probably a bit more fun to be around. But she's also an experiment as to what would happen if a sith was cheerful. A very interesting one.

And yes this is my sithly kitty cat [face_love]

Dark-Fox, what do you wish to ask?

    *cants head to the side*

It would not hurt for the apprentices to speak out, as well, I must say.

Kev, Jenari, your next task is to ask an appropriate question of me. Something you wish to know, and something which will elevate my opinion of you. If no question is asked, then no elevation will occur. My opinion might even... dip.

[face_party]Apprentice now, wow. And of fine pedigree. This will be a day long remembered!

A cheerful sith is an interesting idea, certainly not impossible. My take is that unlike the jedi, sith have no worries about experiencing the breadth of emotion. I know it's probably against the sith code but even compassion (in regard to those they care about) shouldn't be completely alien to them. I remember Sidious in RotS when he seems genuinely upset when he senses Vader is in danger and again during the scene in which he kneels down next to him in the ash, putting his hand on Anakin's head. People have argued that Palpatine is sad because he could very well be losing a rescource but I disagree. The way Ian Mcdiarmid says "look, he's still alive" conveys far more than simply "what a relief".

Also the Son in TCW Mortis trilogy when he kills his sister suffers from a very Vader-esque response of remorse. Having such passions about people along with the massive emotional response would surely be a conduit to great power - as Vader demonstrated when told he was responsible for Padme's death. Such emotional reactions would also do massive damage to their psyche if repeated as a path to power, probably leading to long term madness.

So a cheerful sith could be extremely dangerous and unhinged, almost manic-depressive with extreme highs to incredibly dark lows. Great fun to rp!

I would be very interested in yours, Teegirloo's and The Lady Vader's (and any Sith master I have failed to mention) interpretation of the force and what it means to you, it's ability to self regulate as opposed to the jedi's belief in a prophesied Chosen One and insights into the nature of the light and dark sides.

Or any insight you deign to throw our way.
