I'vs honestly lost touch with the Bond movies sometime after Die Another Day. Though that could mostly be because I had never seen any of the movies until Goldeneye but that was mostly due to the N64 game that came out. I watched Casino Royale but...meh, just haven't been that much into them.

And it seems like I got me some utility vehicles all over mg street. Hopefully that means I'll be getting power back soon! Which means I can get back to playing Halo 4 which is currently trapped in my Xbox! It wants to be played with so badly but I can't do it because I have no power! :'(

And here's a bit of a pick me up for everyone. Still good and relevant.

As someone who's done a lot of critical thinking and writing about Bond, I have quite a lot of thoughts regarding Skyfall. The only question is whether anyone in Hooper's wants to hear them. ;)

I liked it. In an unpassionate kinda way, because I never felt too involved into Bond movies. But it was entertaining. And it had Javier Bardem.

My thoughts are still in process but I will make this one point that I have felt strongly and uncompromisingly:
Javier Bardem made this movie. Without him, Skyfall just doesn't work. More than anyone in a very, very long time Bardem understood what it meant to be a Bond villain and everything he did was gold. The last villain who I felt was this good was Sean Bean, but in a much different way.
    More to come eventually. ;)

The movie is fantastic because reinvents Bond all over again. Questions of age, appropriateness, skill and meaning are raised throughout the film, but in the end Bond is still necessary, warts and all, and that's okay. The movie doesn't try and patronize the old Bond tropes, but rather embraces them through the lens Casino Royale provided.

This keeps with a trend I've seen in modern media of late - until 2010, all that was necessary to make a successful movie, book or comic was to deconstruct the genre and its tropes. Modern media became obsessed with gritty realism, but we've seen things come full circle now.

Kick-Ass deconstructed the superhero, but reconstructed the superhero's motivations. The Amazing Spider-Man rebooted the ailing Spidey franchise and showed us that something can be more grounded in tone and still call to mind the superhero and why we root for them. Finally, the Dark Knight Rises (yes, not the masterpiece that The Dark Knight was) completely rejected the crime drama in favour of large-scale superheroics - Batman was taken out of the shadows and displayed for the hero he is.

Skyfall is, in its own way, completing this journey - it's a love letter to the old Bond films, the tropes and cliches we expect, but it doesn't wallow in the past so much as it finds a way to make the past relevant today. I can't wait to see where the series goes!

I suppose the one advantage of being a grad student is that I can always leave and do my work at home. At 11:30 at night. Like I am right now.

I may be widely sharing that first sentence with some acquaintances with whom I discuss Bond regularly because I think that it may hit the nail on the head.

As for where the series goes, I just hope it finally...
Opens with a frigging gun barrel sequence again because, being a traditionalist, this needs to come back.

Also, another thought that I have and have had ever since seeing the film is that Quantum of Solace has now proven to be an even greater waste of time and resources, making me even angrier than I was before about QOS.

I'm not angry about QOS, because it sets up the Quantum organization for future use, but much as I enjoyed the film, it's not really an integral part to Craig's tenure as Bond.

I really enjoyed that this movie FINALLY sets up a support team and home base for Bond; it's no longer just him and M, and all is well in the world. We finally see that MI6 actually, y'know, does stuff beyond being infiltrated by Quantum and pointing Bond in the right direction.

Also, Kincade is the man, but I heard a rumour Connery was asked to play him. WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN!

Look on the bright side Peng. You know what came out today? Mass Effect 2! :D

    ........Wait.

But blargh, throwing out your back. I think of all the times that I have to lift stuff up at my jobs and wonder when my back will give out on me. However, currently its just my knee that likes to bother me if I work it too hard :p
