Cloning would be the cheapest way to resurrect a character.
Resurrecting Vader would undermine EVERYTHING we see at the end of ROTJ. His death scene and last words would mean NOTHING if through some convenient plot device he is brought back. It is just...I don't even want to think about it.

If that happens, the next time I will watch ROTJ at the end:
Luke: [...] I've come to save you!
Vader: You already have...Luke. You were right, you were right about me. Tell your sister...
Me: Oh shut up already! You'll get resurrected in a few years.

Agreed. Cloning Vader to bring him back would be (unless they found a way to somehow make it work) the first polarizing misstep of the new trilogy. After the PT, SE and Blu-Ray changes it would be great to those this time around.

I think if you absolutely have to bring him back you go the force apparition route like the Dagobah cave and for no longer than the briefest of cameos.

Ew no Vader or Palpatine clones! They're dead, leave them be.

I want the trilogy to be set long enough in the future to feature the original cast in their current age bracket. I want them to be integral to the plot, I'm not averse to one dying unless it is plot driven and not just for shock tactics.

I also want Leia to get some great dramatic lines/scenes in a political sense. Adding some decent drama like the great legal drama/dramedies (The Practice/Boston Legal) would be great - and I think Carrie Fisher could pull off a politician way more convincingly than Natalie Portman.

Not sure I'd want to see much more politics in SW to be honest. Give Leia a leadership role by all means but keep the politics to an OT level.

Politics are boring. Especially in a sci-fi epic.
The way politics are handled in the PT is just wrong - nothing but long speeches with complicated words that mean nothing. Politics in the PT didn't create any tension. They just added to the movies' running time.
Diplomacy is an integral part of politics and it can create tension, but NEVER ONCE do we see diplomacy in the PT scenes involving politics.
You could just remove the Senate scenes and instead tell the audience something like this:

Amidala steps into her room, followed by her escort. She looks tired, demoralized.
AMIDALA: I should have known that trusting the Senate was a mistake.
ESCORT: Are you sure it was the right thing to call for a vote of no confidence against Chancellor Valorum?
AMIDALA: I had no choice. Someone had to stand up against these bureaucrats.
ESCORT: Maybe there is still hope, milady. Senator Palpatine seems to have the support of most of the Senate.
AMIDALA: I have known Palpatine for years, but I am not sure whether he can help us or not. We're on our own.

And with a scene like that we could have spared 1 minute and 30 seconds of political babbling.

That's what I meant. It needs to be better than the PT.

    Yes there are differences.

    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sith

    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Dark_Jedi

Now i am expecting lightsaber duels in Episode 7, which means we have to have darksiders, unless you want those duels to consist of Jedi having practice duels with each other.

However, that does not mean the Sith have to return, because the Sith are only a specific group of darksiders, who practice a specific ideology that makes them Sith. But they don't make up every darksider who has or will exist in the star wars galaxy (actually dark jedi existed even before the Sith organization was created).

So maybe for those who don't want the Sith to return, but still want darksiders, this is a way to go, to have a or a group of dark jedi be the threat.

Perhaps some former Jedi, exiled during the purge.

According to the EU, they do return.
And, "The Sith were always reborn within the ranks of the Jedi"...

*Scratches out reborn and replaces it with just born*

Politics can be interesting, if actually done right. Imagine this in a scene.

"Why would we want to be a member of your New Republic, our world was turned into a wasteland under the Old Republic's watch, under the Jedi's watch, and did they lift a hand to stop it? No! Your rebellion didn't help us, we freed ourselves. All we want is to be left alone!" - Senator of Mandalore

What about the Mandalorians as the "new threat"? There's a lot that could be adapted into a strong film version.

A Mandalorian resurgence and independence movement as the 'new threat' is one I could run with as a great starting point for a new series, but honestly we've got nothing solid for a 'baddie'.

"You must unlearn what you have learned"

Look at it not from the perspective of someone steeped in EU lore, but from that of a movie-goer. Through that lens, the only difference between a Jedi and a Sith is that Sith get angry and use their powers to rule the galaxy. And hurl lightning bolts.

I've been thinking about some themes that will show up in the ST. There are certain things that make Star Wars what it is:

    *Galaxy-spanning conflict
*Personal conflict between good and evil, with lightsabers
*The hero's internal struggle with his/her own capacity for evil
*The power of love, be it romantic, familial, or between comrades
Add to that the question explored in the PT which is how does an entire society go down the tubes.

There are certain universal elements that resonate with the viewing audience, because the audience can easily see current or historical events in what's happening. Think of the comparisons made -rightly or wrongly- between Vader and GW Bush in RotS, the comparisons Lucas made between Palpatine and Nixon, so on.

I'm wondering if we'll see more real world parallels in the PT. For example, to go ahead and Godwin this thread, I could see a story of a galaxy-spanning conflict being started based on an allegory for Germany between the fall of Kaiser Wilhelm and the rise of Hitler. A charismatic demagogue promises to restore order, even at a terrible cost. Or perhaps a comparison to the chaos in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Perhaps a well-intentioned descendant of Anakin Skywalker wishes finally bring order to the galaxy, and falls to the dark side while attempting to do so, sparking a galactic conflagration in the process...

Nice fan trailer... has anyone besides me taken Yoda's final words to Luke to mean two things?

"When gone am I, the last of the Jedi will you be. The force runs strong in your family, pass on what you have learned..."

    1. Train Leia and anyone you can find with force sensitivity.
    -And-
    2. Permission for Luke to have a family... the whole passing on thing seems to have a double meaning in my mind.

One of my biggest concerns is that we focus so strongly on Han, Luke, Leia in their golden years that we get caught up in more of a political film rather than an action/adventure film. I have no issue bringing all three back if done properly, but I want it to have more of an OT feel than a PT feel. I'm not even as down on the PT as much as most, but I would much rather they recapture the magic of Star Wars than delve into another realm that doesn't quite feel the same.

I agree 100%. If this is the backbone of the new sequel trilogy I think it can be done well, but I get immediate concerns:

    1) Let's use young adult actors, not children.
    2) It becomes too much of an Incredibles family fest.
    3) We get weighed down in a murky story where Leia is some Jedi statesman and the philosophy pushes more than the action (though I think this would be unlikely).

The politics was one thing I'd always expected and looked forward to in the PT. We were promised that it would be Machiavellian and intriguing and we got that plus a lot of action.

And in the end, there's a big laser sword fight in the Senate... [face_laugh] Now THAT was a debate.

The more I think about this, the more I expect that the writers of the new trilogy will give us something we have never seen before in the Star Wars universe. Forget about cloned Emperors and Vaders. The very suggestions make me cringe. Since Episode 7 was announced I have been focusing my thoughts on the villain. Who could possibly be a bigger villain that the combination of The Emperor and Vader? That is the key questions.

Then I really thought about it. The Emperor and Vader were both bad asses, but there was a lot of logic and even - hear me out - honour to their villainy. The Emperor was a Sith Master that carried out a plan that was centuries in the making to destroy the Jedi and rule the galaxy. Vader was a hero that was corrupted by evil and eventually redeemed by his son. There was a logic to how they acted. The Emperor set events in motion that led to him taking over the galaxy and Vader was his ultimate prize.

The question is, how does the new trilogy top that. And one name popped into my head: The Joker (from the Dark Knight film). The new villain in the new trilogy has to be someone that is a villain for the sake of it. He or she is not fulfilling some big plan or following a predetermined course of events. He or she is an agent of chaos. They are the embodiment of evil.

In the aftermath of Jedi, the Alliance restored the Republic. Luke rebuilt the Jedi. Peace broke out. Prosperity arrives for all. And then, something new. Something nobody has seen before. Something so terrifying arrives and forces our heroes to return to the battle they thought was over. Our heroes are forced to confront the unimaginable. It could be a story of old heroes returning to action, a transition to a new generation and a battle against an enemy that has no boundaries.

Pretty much said the same as me a few pages back. It needs an anarchist. Someone who simply wants to destroy the Republic.
I'd begin the film with the literal destruction of Coruscant.
    Leia murdered.
Her and Solo's son kidnapped (to be cloned or used in some way to destroy the Jedi.
Luke off-world struggling with his own demons.

The villain has to be of a completely different nature, as you said, to Palpatine else it's the same old stuff all over again.

Interesting idea, but I'm not sure I want a villain in the vein of Joker or Bane.

It would be interesting to have the Imperial Remnant acting as terrorists, I suppose.

One thing I've been wondering is, if Lucas originally used The Hero with a Thousand Faces as a framework, are there any parts of The Hero's Journey that have not yet been incorporated into the movies? Maybe those stories will be told in the ST.
