I guess my situation is weird enough that I'll give some context. I'm 26, and didn't see the movies until the special editions. I got into star wars through the old decipher card game. When I was in the 4th grade I was a good enough gamer to pay my tournament entry fees and win most of my collection. Each minor background character and object were playable cards, with some brief history included. Before I saw the movie I had some attachment to say, Ponda boba, because he helped me win more cards. Two years later I saw the special editions and started to check out EU books from the local library.

From maybe 4th -12th grade I was obsessed with star wars. I'm much more a casual fan now. I read 3-4 books a year, watch the tv show [went to Celebration 5 and 6, but mostly to fullfill the dreams of a previous version of myself ;) ].

I'm not sure what the big deal is here. All indications point to Ep7 taking place in or around 45ABY, just after Crucible. From what I gather, everything at that time and after (until 130ABY) is a wide open blank slate, so the EU won't necessarily have to be interfered with. Luke and Leia will be 64 years old, Han 74, Lando 76. That's only slightly older than the actors themselves, so they'll easily be able to reprise their roles. The kids, Ben Skywalker and Jaina Solo, will be 18 and 36, respectively. If the new trilogy starts around this date, the only dispute with the EU will be whether or not the kids will be included. Honestly, I think they will, because it would be pointless to create new characters when you could easily use what's been established and not risk upsetting a pretty sizable fanbase.

The problem, as I see it, is a lot of fans are probably operating under the false pretense that the characters are going to be referencing previous events that only happened in the EU, but that's not how it works in the Star Wars movies. Even in the OT, Han never sat down with Luke and reminisced about how they blew up the Death Star, etc. Therefore, expect the new movies to not interfere with the EU, but don't expect the characters to mention things like the Yuuzhan Vong, Darth Caedus, Anakin Solo, etc. The new movies will most likely leave it ambiguous whether or not those events happened; neither implying they did or didn't.

Nor was I, I read it a magazine. Just stuck with me.

Don't think so - they diid come across a couple of Dark characters from the Shadow Academy in SBS, but otherwise no Sith at all - Spoiler for Crosscurrent/Riptide those two were actually members of the One Sith, tasked with escorting Lumiya to a meeting with Krayt? - only they got picked up by the Vong (Lumiya escaped).[/quote]

Okay, but was it not ultimately revealed that Force users where manipulating the Vong?

Exactly. There are plenty of Marvel stories that are superb but have never fitted in with any canon because the writers assumed that there was another 3 years between TESB and ROTJ.

And Lucas already "un-canonized" Tales of the Jedi with making Qui-Gonn the force ghost. It doesn't make them any less fun.

No not weird... I had thought it unusual the merchandise lead you to the movies rather then the other way around, but then I remembered that it was the same with me only with action figures. And it probably is for a lot of people.

And it is the same for my sisters kids. Most wear the pj's and t-shirts and sometimes root out my old toys when they come around, but they are too young for the movies.

Seven Reasons why EP7 will be set 40years after Return of the Jedi & keep the entire EU intact :
    1. No books written 40 - 100 years after EP6 because Episodes 7,8,9 & 10,11,12 fit into this time line
    2. Lucas supports the EU
    3. Lucas Film & now Disney hold the lincence for the EU ( why throw it out - money to be made )
    4. The old trilogy actors ages hold up pefrectly for 40yrs after EP6 .
    5. An original story can be told
    6. Chewbacca is only one character & he was in EP3 for a reason George new he wasn;t coming back .
    7. Ben Skywalkers age ( 19 ) matches up with Luke's age in Episode 4 as Does Allana's age matches up with Anakin's in EP1 .
Also what rubbish about an audience saying WTF concerning Mara , Jacen & Anakin ( solo ) :
    1. Mara died just as Padme died
    2. Just don't mention Jacen & Anakin that can be passed over
    3. Don't mention previous invasions , wars ect ( the clone wars was mentioned in EP4 did the audience go WFT why didn't we see that !!!!! ) .

No. The puppet-master was Omini, himself a Yuuzhan Vong. Telepathic but not (IMHO) a bona-fide Force-user.

Probably mixing ALL of them together :). The mind isn't what it was was - it could quote the EU back in the day - now I struggle to remember yesterday.

Check out the LIT board in the EU forum regarding my post you quoted above - Jason Fry of the Essential Guides series is a regular poster, as is a co-writer of his (Thrawn McEwok) for the 'Warfare' Guide - and Jonathan Jackson Miller (Lost Tribe of the Sith e-books/collection and the forthcoming 'Kenobi') also posts. My opinion of JJM is that he is one of the best new authors to hit SW for quite a while - and he responded very courteously to a question of mine about Kesh (the planet) within a couple of days. Not too many questions to him, please, though, we want him to finish writing 'Kenobi'!

    Excatly.

As I said earlier, the EU as it stands now is most likely going away or changing signifcantly.

The EU has always been there to support and complement and expand on the films (and now tv shows), not the other way around. So saying that things like Ben or Mara or Jaina have to be includes is....backwards.

There are two approachs to take. 1) You can be bitter see this is a bad things and having waisted your time reading books you enjoyed etc... or 2) You can be excited that there are new movies comings and that you are most likely going to get a whole load of new stories about new characters (and you MIGHT just like them better then the past ones......)

While it is possible it's not probable:

    1. You're assuming the story will take place to align exactly with the actor's ages. It might not.
    2. Lucas also changes EU whenever he chooses, which is often.
    3. It doesn't account for that much revenue, 1/4 of what the movies bring in.
    4. Again, the actors can be made up and lit to pass for older or younger.
    5. That's what they're planning to do, and why the post RotJ EU is in probable jeopardy.
    6. George put Chewie in RotS because he wasn't planning on making VII-IX. He also put him in TCW. I think George loves Chewie and will want to use him yet again. And not putting Chewie in a movie with Luke, Leia and Han would be like not using R2, 3PO or the Falcon. Not gonna happen.
    7. No one cares whose ages match up in the EU. It's a moot point. The greatest likelihood is that George and Miachael Arndt will create new characters for their movie.

    1. Padme didn't exist when ANH was written. Luke's mom was a vague idea in George's head. Mara, on the other hand, is a character with over a decade of history and her own little fan following. Factoring her in the movie in any way is opening a can of worms that will only work against the movie. I don't know what they're planning, they might have an ex-Imperial assassin named Mara lurking around, completely retrofit into their movie, or Luke might make a passing reference to "your mother", I guess something might happen. I'm just thinking, love Zahn though I do, if I were given this assignment, the very last thing I would want to do would be to import EU characters like that; it just seems counter-intuitive to me. Why hire an Academy Award winner only to handicap them?
    2. Again, fitting VII into an ever-expanding storyline seems like a bad idea. Will the screen-writers have to consult with the EU editors on future films, so they don't step on any unfolding storylines? It seems patently ridiculous to me. Again, it just make problems where no problems need to exist. The number of audience members who know or care about those characters will be less than 1/4 of the potential audience.
    3. They might as well just scrap the whole thing and start fresh. Why do a half-job on the most eagerly anticipated movie of all time to accommodate a series of books that just engineered its own little "soft reboot" because it was getting so stale & unpopular? That doesn't make sense.

    1) Only matters if they plan on using that EU material in Episode VII, which isn't likely (given how Lucas has treated the EU in the past). They can set it 40 years after, but if the characters and universe completely change......
    2) He has also said its a different universe then the movie and tv universe and its been said countles stimes that Lucas won't be bound or limited by it. There is no reason to think they'll force the filmmakers to make an EU movie instead of a Star Wars movie.
    3) Probably more money to be made by re-starting the whole thing
    4) The perfect time to set the movie for the age of the actors would be 30 years, since RotJ came out about 30 years ago.
    5) An original story can be told at any point in the time line
    6) See #1
    7) Or they can just make up the characters they want. And its not rubbish at all. You can't start a story in the middle. There is a reason comic book movies tell the origin first and don't just pick up were the comics are at that moment. You think Marvel could have had Tony Stark be the leader of Shield in a post Civil War world in the first Ironman movie? Thats kind of what you're suggesting. Or could they have started TPM where AotC started? Would that have worked? Just tried to sum up what happened in TPM in a couple lines?

And just from a cinamatic and storytelling point of view, you dont' want to TELL your audience about something like Luke meeting someone, getting married, having a child and losing his wife. You want to SHOW it, you want the audience to EXPERIENCE it. Thats the point of telling the story. Its the difference between making a Star Wars movie and an EU movie. I don't think they have much interest in making an EU movie.

I missed this "soft reboot" - what happened?

I agree with all of these points.

And Lucas' fondness of Chewie is well known.

I wouldn't see introducing Mara as handicapping Arndt. The new movies will certainly introduce Han and Leia's children (and possibly grandchildren) and might also introduce a family for Luke (we don't know yet if Lucas still intends for Luke to be alone). These new family members will in all likelihood be new creations, but I don't see how introducing the Solo twins and Mara would be make difficulties for Arndt.

It certainly wouldn't be as difficult as dealing with the NJO affects on Star Wars.

Yes, the movies are the important thing.

    Agreed.

Del Rey is doing their own "Episode VII" with Luke, Han, Leia ("Crucible") to try and realign their completely mutated characters with the ones we fell in love with. They're releasing this on the back of "Scoundrels" an OT era Han novel by Tim Zahn.

John Jackson Miller created a bottomless well of Sith to pull out anytime anyone wants to ("Lost Tribe of Sith").

Aaron Allston aligned the EU with "Mortis" to open up new vistas of Force mythology.

They're planning a "next gen" series to bridge the NJO era to the Legacy era ("Sword of the Jedi").

They're experimenting with a Dawn of the Jedi novel as a back-up plan.

All of this was in response to the abysmal low quality of "LotF".
