My wife and I saw it last night. We were blown away. It was simply spectacular. Never before had I enjoyed a Bond film so much and it's definitely the best of the lot I've seen. I definitely need to see it again because there's just so much to absorb in one viewing. Especially that finale. Damn.

DAD had so much promise until the SUPER CLINIC of Cuba (and forgiving the "stopped heartbeat" sequence). TMWTGG was a poor book and worse film, and the less that is said of Moonraker the better.

Octopussy is worse. At least Moonraker didn't have a scene where Bond disguises himself as a clown.

    Moonraker lacks BONKERS BERKOFF.

    Check and mate.

I don't get why people are dissing the clown disguise, which I kind of like - having the normally smooth, suave Bond forced into a disguise so totally bereft of dignity and cool is such a great comeuppance for the slightly smug 007 - yet no-one mentions the fact that in the same film he disguises himself as a bear and is seen to check his bear-wristwatch in the background for comic effect while the bad guys are discussing the time of the nuclear bomb's detonation. Seriously guys, you need to prioritise your crap.

Moonraker has a title song by Shirley Bassey, a villain played by Michael Lonsdale, and Ken mother****ing Adams.

    GAME OVER.

EDIT: Look, I'm not saying that Moonraker is a good film. I'm just saying that as bad as it is, it doesn't compare to the soul destroying vortex of terrible that is Octopussy.

Because at least bears are badass.

I think the Tarzan soundeffect along with James Bond shooing away a tiger are better arguments against Octopussy than James Bond disguising as a clown.

That scene, Bond disguised as a clown or not, is incredibly tense. I really thought he wasn't going to make it to the bomb in time. I'm dead serious. Just one of the reasons I love Octopussy.

Octopussy is judged on the sum of its parts. The comedic effects, which had to come in because of the dimwit Bond crowd and their befuddled expressions after FYEO, diminish it but it has a lot of strengths to compensate.

Moonraker, on the other hand, has Bond go to outer space. A pigeon do a double-take. The Bondola. A door with the theme music to Close Encounters. In short, nothing good came of that film.

Agreed with this. It's one of the scenes in the film that actually works.

And he disguises himself as a gorilla, not a bear, IIRC. Important distinction!

I actually enjoyed Moonraker more than Octopussy on recent viewing though. It's just better directed, a bit more lush, and easier to give yourself over to. Octopussy is a bit of a mess. I think Glen, Maibaum & Wilson attempted the "Potpourri" approach to far greater effect in The Living Daylights, which is better at maintaining a tone and some sort of through-line.

In terms of bad Moore films though, I'm always entertained by A View to a Kill. I feel the need to scour myself afterwards, but the Duran Duran/Walken/Barry/Macnee/Doody cocktail works for me. It's a terrible film, but... yeah. Maybe it's just that it's the first on I saw.

The first one certainly has an impact; mine was The Living Daylights.

I think my first Bond was The Spy Who Loved Me.And to my generation, Moore was Bond. His films may have dated horribly, but at the time he was very popular.

I honestly can't recall which was my first Bond film. Back when I was a tyke I recall that every so often they'd have Goldfinger in the tube in one of the local channels. But I'm pretty certain the first one I saw in a theater was For Your Eyes Only.

Goldeneye was the first Bond film I saw in theaters, when I was seven years old, and it was also probably the first one I saw, period. Yet I still feel like I knew what James Bond was before I ever saw Goldeneye. Hrmm. I'm not really sure. I think Goldeneye's effect on me is disproportionate even more than my first introduction to a series of movies would be because it also had one of the greatest video games ever, on one of the greatest consoles ever. That's probably part of why I can intellectually understand why Pierce Brosnan may not be one of the better Bonds, but he's still one of my sentimental favorites to ever play the role.

The first Bond that I saw in theaters was The World Is Not Enough. I don't think that I saw Tomorrow Never Dies in theaters. I can't remember which Bond I saw first, but I think that my dad introduced them to me over a Bond marathon on tv, so I got several in succession.

First Bond I watched all the way through: Goldfinger

First Bond I saw in a theater: Die Another Day

I've only seen 7 Bond films so far in my life: Goldfinger, Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, Die Another Day, Casino Royale, Quantam of Solace, and Skyfall. My absolute favorites of the bunch are Goldfinger, Casino Royale, and Skyfall. Based of this limited sample size, even with Connery's reputation, I much prefer & enjoy more Craig as Bond (of course to be fair, his Bond & Connery's Bond are different, as are the styles of the films). Much like Coruscant, Goldeneye holds a sentimental place in my heart, though for me it's more due to the N64 video game (that got me into Bond to begin with). I hope to see more of the Bond films throughout the years, especially now the Moore films, just to see if Ender is justified in his hatred of that version of Bond.

How many of the "kids of the 80's" here had the James Bond ID card/wallet from NSNA?

First Bond I ever saw: Dr. No.
Second Bond I ever saw: Moonraker
    Third Bond: Licence to Kill

First in a theater: Tomorrow Never Dies

Come to think of it, I have a strange Bond history.

I think the first I saw on TV was either DAF or YOLT. ABC used to show Bond films fairly regularly on Sunday Nights.First in the theater was, sadly, Moonraker.

As for the list, any movie that doesn't have Moonraker, Octopussy or VTAK as the worst ids clearly a joke. Not sure what his problem is with Dalton and Brosnan, I thought they were both quite good.
I would attribute much of that promise to it following the storyline of the Moonraker book, which is actually one of my favorites.
