Read it for the first time this past summer. Very fast read; it took less than a day. I loved the parallels to the rise of the Soviet Union and seeing what was analogous to what.

On its face, it's a story about a bunch of animals that band together and throw off the shackles of oppression by their drunkard abusive owner and band together to run the farm themselves for their own benefit. The story centers on the struggles the newly formed society of animals endure as they create a life for themselves. It is an allegory to promise and appeal, as well as the dangers of communism. Hardly subtle, it reads much like a parable where the reader is expected at the end to draw his/her own conclusions as to the moral of the story.

It's one of the very few books I've read numerous times. The first time I read it was when I was 8 and every time I've read it, it was better than the previous time.

It helps if you already have a decent amount of knowledge about the early days of the Soviet Union, with Lenin, Stalin, and Trotsky, among others. That was seriously the most interesting facet for me.

    Read it, and

I seriously doubt anything written by George Orwell is about how communism as a thing unto itself is dangerous. Considering, y'know, he was a communist. :p Don't confuse anti-Stalinism for a condemnation of the ideology as a whole.

True enough. It was more about the dangers of totalitarianism and plutocracy. Better?:p

Yes. :p Alternatively: a touching story of a horse and his ideology with some fun facts about glue.

You will note that I said it was an allegory to the promise and appeal of communism, right? Or are you trying to suggest that Orwell thought that there were no dangers in communism?

But yes, I agree that he was not anti-communist. I didn't say that he was.

You will... trust me. Orwell was a genius.

No it doesn't... it's an excellent book on its own. It can mean many different things to many different people.

What are the rules for selecting a book? I tried to find them somewhere, but couldn't. My turn is getting close.
