Here's some ideas I might like to see -

1. A dream with Palpatine in it, perhaps related to the worries the main characters will have regarding whatever challenge they face, or some kind of vision/hallucination of Palpatine by one of the characters (Luke, I'd imagine), much like Ra's Al Ghul's appearance in The Dark Knight Rises. Kind of as a surprise cameo.

2. The bad guy, whether a new villain, or perhaps one of the Skywalker/Solo kids or a former Jedi turned evil, could find Darth Sidious' holocron and learn from it, much like Luke finding Palpatine's Book of Anger in Dark Empire.

I don't know about Palpatine returning as a full character though, unless there was some kind of cult trying to revive his spirit like the Cult of Marka Ragnos in Jedi Academy, or as a better example, like Sauron in the Lord of the Rings series. That might be an interesting direction with this imminent return of a very powerful evil, even if the heroes stop it before it happens at the end. We'll see. I'm pretty open minded to what we might get.

Like the term we use "Great Caesar's Ghost" as an exclamation of surprise, in the star wars universe they will say "Great Palpy's Ghost". Then one day three kid's say it at the same time and that summons Palpatine's spirit who will posses one of the kids and goes on a murder rampage with a vibro kitchien knife

 

Even force cultists collecting artifacts and keeping the name Palpatine alive is a threat.... Holocrons, or the ruined statues in coruscanti underworld etched in his image would be great....

 

I don't think it would surprise anyone if the CIA overthrew the New Republic and put Palpatine's ghost back in charge.

The rebels in ANH look suspiciously like South American guerillas to me.

We get more Ian McDiarmid if Palpatine comes back so that is a plus for Palpatine coming back. I'm hoping for a Plagueis comeback though.

 

What was the quote from Hamill from way back? Something about the ST being more ethereal? A bit more action on the netherworld of the force than in the previous movies maybe? If that's the case, then sure, a Palps spirit is a possibility.

 

Please... no Palpatine Force ghost. I really liked his character, but he died at the end of ROTJ. No emperor clones, no Sith Force ghosts.

 

I think that would make the OT meaningless then, because Anakin's redemption against Palpatine wouldn't have impact it should have.

Have his presence still be felt in the ST and have him come back for the 10-12 trilogy or something.

I agree, but I think the Holocron should be presented to him by someone that knew his father. So enter and elderly Ahsoka Tano. Who could possibly have more influence on Luke than someone who actually knew, learned and fought alone side his father and probably would know where they kept the Holocrons in the temple. Besides, just imagine all the stuff he would learn about those forgotten times. They could even splice in flashbacks of the Clone Wars and how the Jedi Council treated Ahsoka and that Anakin was the only one that stood by her. That would get Luke thinking!
