A certain large-scale superhero blockbuster that is massive, massive in scope, and yet ends with a rather intimate and emotionally fraught stand-off between three men (one of the men's wife and kids present). Never fails to be utterly gripping.

Well, it's a pain in the ass linking pictures on my phone, but the climax of Casino Royale -- whether you consider that the nut-beating, the Venice shootout, or "Bond. James Bond" -- is pretty awesome.

The end of The Departed, too. The Prestige and Memento, too.

Ducard and crew crashing Bruce Wayne's birthday party in Batman Begins.

And I second the ROTK one.

Is there a 90s version of this thread somewhere?

"I would rather suffer the end of Romulus a thousand times. I would rather die in agony than accept assistance from you."

That's the start of the 3rd act, not the climax.

Sorry but I think you're confusing climax with denouement.

    This would be the climax

    And it was indeed awesome.

The climax is the ending because immediately afterward you're supposed to roll over and fall asleep.

Apparently people here think the climax is the cigarette afterwards.

EDIT: or, in the case of ROTK, the pack of cigarettes afterwards.

1997 film. Unless you want to go by the 3D release, which is 2012. A couple of years out either way.

    1) I love that someone posted the first of 18 possible endings to Return of the King. Clearly you appreciate irony or instead are from New Zealand like Peter Jackson, and thus don't understand the notion of film climaxes.

Well, one could argue that for Aragorn, getting the Ring destroyed wasn't what was important (hence why he was able to let Frodo go at the end of FOTR), though it was a necessary step towards achieving his destiny. What he set to do above all was to restore the glory of Gondor, so that he might become a suitor worthy of Arwen's sacrifice (her relinquising her immortality to live with him). So while the principal climax of the trilogy is indeed Frodo destroying the Ring, as fas as Aragorn is concerned, it's when he sees Arwen and realises all his hopes and dreams have come true.

    Cheers,
    Lauré :)

It was dumb and flatly contradicted a single movie later. Here, the whole point of Colonel Sanders's bluff is that the machines can exist without the Matrix, and prepared to do so. Suddenly, in the third movie, this is no longer a possibility. Faced with a second omnipotent entity that exists inside the Matrix, this time they are magically unable to survive simply by shutting the thing off, even though less than 30 minutes of footage ago they said that's exactly how they could handle it.

At the point that Neo comes to the Deus Ex Machina the Matrix is no longer under their control and they cannot shut it off anymore than thye could shut themselves off. All the machines are in contact with The Source, that included Smith. ("The program Smith is beyond your control, soon he will infect this world as he has the Matrix").

Aside from that the above conversation is great in its symbols. The Architect is God and in this case quite literally as well as symbolically. Neo is not just a Jesus figure(as they ram down our throats) but he is Lucifer, he is choas and rebellion(The Merovingian holds some of this symbology as well but for different reasons). Heaven is the machine world, the squiddies are angels of death, they are the enlightened, they know. Humanity is cast down.Evil and good and all the grey in between are mixed and flip flopped.

The first Matrix film is all about their beliefs in an oracle and all of that is pulled out from under them. The Oracle is a program that does nothing more than calculate in a way different from the Architect, she is not magical.

I could go on but THIS SITE among others is worded well enough. Even if you disagree and hate the fims it's still a cool read.

Which movie is this still from?
P.S. Thanks for spoiling the ending, Adam.

I vote for the entire PT's climaxes, even though technically TPM belongs in the 90's.

    And The Fall.

    Probably others, too.
