Well, by default *everything* is canon. That doesn't necessarily mean it overrules the other sources about the formation of the Rebellion.

There are different levels of canon though, and games don't rank very highly in that respect.

But, if Lucas himself decided that TFU is his story about how the Rebellion came to be formed, then that makes TFU a lot more canon than other games The Maker had no hand in as well as many EU books.

Yes, they should be canon, and not just the good games, but the bad ones as well (though things like LEGO Star Wars and other similarly alternate takes should not be, regardless of quality). I dislike the idea of getting to pick and choose what is canon and what isn't. If it was made by Lucasfilm or from something with a direct connection (Bantam/Del Rey, Marvel/Dark Horse, LucasArts and other licensed games, etc.) and isn't exclusively an alternate take or non canon like Infinities then it is canon, and as canon as the films. To say otherwise is to show disrespect towards the creators, and also feels kind of like you're giving a piece of work the same treatment Orwell's Party gave someone when they unpersoned them. I've never liked that. You suck it up and take the good and the bad together.

Off-topic, but this is also the reason why I didn't/don't want an Episode VII (or VIII, or IX). New films in the Star Wars universe in some uncharted time? Sure. But not something that will surely mess existing things up to a huge degree.

The games have the same level of canonicity as the books so they are as high as everything that isn't the movies or their novellisations, afaik.

TFU had 3 different formats as well game / book / graphic novel...

TCW TV show is above everything except the movies.

And to some, TCW doesn't even merit any canon status.

This should put TFU canon issues to rest... as mentioned in the Essential Reader's Companion:

The surprising tale and concept for the game received personal approval from George Lucas, but it does not occupy a higher standard of canon than any other Expanded Universe lore. That is, it still exists outside the movies and television series produced by Lucas and would be subordinate to mythology revealed in those media. For example, Lucas's alternate explanation for the roots of the Rebel Alliance appear in season five of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which take precedence over Starkiller's involvement.

Well, Season 5 isn't finished yet. So far I've seen nothing about the formation of the Rebellion, it may be possible for Starkiller's story to overlap with it anyway.

That's not really up to us, Leyland Chee has said it is second only to the movies and so it is.

The concept of canon went out the window for me the moment Del Rey screwed up the post-NJO and TCW rewrote the Clone Wars for no reason whatsoever.
