In the commentary featurette/trivia section it is said that R2-D2 is often just called "R2" for short and that R2-KT might confuse that if they refer to "R2" it would be unclear as to who was being addressed, so they made a new droid called "QT-KT" instead of "R2-KT" though since they keep breaking the "model number- unique identification number" droid naming scheme, I don't know if QT is an R2 unit, or if QT is now some new kind of droid model. TCW has no consistency in the naming of droids.

lol No rhyme or reason to it, is there?

Unless there are R2-R4's & R2-R6's... but those sound about as dumb as it gets.:p

There are many things wrong with this:

    - I still see no reason of changing R2-KT to a new droid for this arc
    - if it is not R2 KT then it is not the same tribute to the little brave girl
    - they call the M5 BZ droid by his second set of letters so...
    - SO why not just keep R2-KT if it was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooo needed to have this exact tribute droid but use the BZ logic in name calling

Sounds like how AMD or Asus or Intel name their products. It is not dumb. :D

I would see three options to fix the problem (all fanon at this point), though of course there are maybe alternatives I've not considered:

    1. M5-BZ for instance is an R4-astromech that was originally referred to by the standard R4-xyz naming system at that M5 might be an alteration to the name given to it by the Jedi, perhaps to denote a specific role rather than denoting the model.
    2. M5-BZ is not an R4-astromech and though it has an R4 style chassis, it is running M5-astromech software/has differing internal hardware.
    3. M5-BZ is an R4-astromech and that there is no rule that says R4-astromechs must have "R4" in their name, and that those with R4 in the name might refer to those of that model that were among the first produced while other letters/numbers might denote droids produced later in that model's line, or some other such method to the naming scheme.

The wookiepedia just goes along with the idea that M5 is an R4 and I don't know if there's any reference to it as such or if that's just fan assumption based on outward appearance. I would think that perhaps Filoni would have to have cleared the names with Lucas and Lucas might have some kind of explanation for why there is a huge variance in droid names. Though since I have no idea what is talked about in those conversations between Lucas and Filoni, I can only speculate as to what they might be.

It seems like one of those things that Filoni would be asked and he'd say something like: "Well think about it, there are potentially billions or trillions of R2 units in the galaxy and they'd run out of R2 names pretty quick if they stuck with the R2-AB naming scheme, they'd be running into R2-ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOP12345678, but we only ever see up to 5 digits being used in a name. QT is still an R2 unit even though she doesn't have R2 in her name."

For all I know Lucas told Filoni something like that.

The EU will work it out, though I wish the trivia section touched upon such blatant deviations from EU (or even the films - R2 is "an R2 unit" not "THE R2 unit"). If the answer is something like the above, that's the kind of "trivia" I'd actually find more interesting than a lot of the trivia they touch upon in most episodes.

And I think that Lucas does not care for logic. I think he just says: "Put any droid in, I don't care. The fans will have to live with the lack of logic I give."

These days the EU is usually the thing that tries to sort out and fix messes that the show makes. Even if they are not the biggest.

R2 is probably the smartest droid out of the others that are featured in this Arc

I miss good ol' Ric. I watched Alien 3 recently where the same actor (Ralph Brown) plays as a character repeatedly referred to as "85" in reference to his IQ. Seems appropriate for Ric Olie too. On another note, it just makes me hate the forced American accent. I usually am impressed with how easy non-American actors can pick up an American accent for roles and I would never have guessed that they weren't American (meanwhile I hear American actors criticized all the time for adopting accents that are not convincing). Ric Olie was the exception. Terrible voice.

Useless Ralph Brown trivia of the day.

Pablo Hidalgo has presented the idea that astromech names are just fragments of a much longer serial number. For example, "R2-D2" might be short for W99R7YT66E5R2D2J7M22Q2. I think it's a good idea, but has gone entirely unused in Star Wars media.

It would have been better if they could just keep their **** together and keep the R-series background intact, but that's asking way too much from people who don't care about that stuff.

And of course the reason they call her QT-KT is "cutie Katie"...

Like how the model numbers for modern electronics are often shortened. Cool.
