The agreement seems to be a retcon book that follows his adventure. Some theories are he survives the moon strike, or the moon strike was a clone of him that didn't know it was a clone... With Peter Mayhew signed for 789, it is a good bet Chewie will survive. It isn't like he got a lightsaber through the chest. Something Darth Maul managed to survive...

 

Peter Mayhew wrote the foreword to the Chewbacca comic, in which after his death, various people (Wedge, Leia, Han, Luke, Attichitcuk) tell stories about Chewie's adventures.

 

And he will probably write the forward for second volume, where we explore his supposed death, but in all reality it is an adventure of his return to his friends, that takes 20 years...

I must say, as much as I'd prefer not to have a Jedi double act again since I preferred the Luke-Han dynamic to Obi-Anakin, I'd more than happily make an exception if it was Lowbacca.

I think that statement was based on this article from 2003.

It says that a British magazine called Hotdog quoted Mayhew as saying that when he signed his contract for III, it had a clause requiring him to work in VII, VIII, and IX.
