I would flip for a movie where the villain is Harry Mudd. But maybe not so much for a movie where the villain is a high-jumping, black-trenchcoating, big-gunning Harry Mudd.

    She's probably dead.

No- but that's not stopping people from speculating.

Maybe the villain is a TOS series redshirt who was supposed to die on a mission but instead survived due to the time changes and now wants revenge on Starfleet for their policy of having one redshirt die per mission.

So, it's looking as though the writers were lying through their teeth when they told us Cumberpatch was playing a well-known TOS character. Now he's just another Nero, someone they made up out of thin air. I was really looking forward to him being Khan or Mitchell. Thanks for ripping apart my hopes, you obnoxious jerks.

I would hate to see him be Khan. Rebooting dosn't mean having to re-do all the old movies and plots over again, do something different with a similar feel.
I don't really want to go and see a film I've seen several times recreated by new actors in a fancier ship.

    But you said this:
And that line of argument is completely and utterly moot if it isn't Khan.

I hope when they make the inevitable Holiday Special it's called Star Trek Into Christmas.

No, it's the future so it will be "Star Trek Into Happy Holidays."

"What we know" is relative. A few days ago we knew even less. They just haven't ended the speculation despite what we now know.

What I'm saying is your own arguments are internally inconsistent unless you actually think it's Khan.

What I'm saying is people were speculating if he was Khan or not (and, if not, what links, if any, he might have to Khan) and that the marketing would be aware that that has been the driving conversation about the film during its pre-release so far.

So, regardless if the trailer makes that first option an unlikely possibility, the latter remains. and the marketing would not want to cut off that pre-release discussion/buzz. They don't want to actively reduce people talking about the movie.

I know that's what you're saying and I responded to it already with this post:

And you responded to it with something that doesn't make a lick of sense unless the villain actually was Khan. Glad we had this conversation (twice).

My take away from this John Harrison business: Either they are lying about who exactly he is, or they are terrible at naming things. I would've expected better from the writers of Star Trek Into....oh wait.

Well, he appears to be a human white guy from Earth. What's he supposed to be named?

    Captain Crumpet?

(if he's British, like the poster seems to suggest)

His first name is supposed to be Captain?

    That seems a tad presumptuous...

Played with some red matter, went back in time, now we're in an alternate universe, sorry. ;)

I don't think they intend to keep the villain a secret till the theater, either- but I think keeping it a secret until the final trailer release marks the main phase of the marketing is plausible. We're still in teaser territory. They want people knowing a new film is coming and wondering who the villain is. When we get to the spring, they can go into the villain and specific plot.

I dunno, something not boring? Their are plenty of not boring human white guy from earth. Star Trek is full of them.
