I watched the Avengers again last night, great movie. I don't know why but to me it has the same pacing and spirit of ROTJ!

I really enjoyed Avengers. I have followed the comics for years and I think they captured the primary spirit of the comics. With that said however, SW is so superior to Avengers it is hard to make a comparison between the two. I for one would be disappointed in a SW movie of Avengers' caliber.

I don't think these films will get too bogged down in the OT, PT, or EU, but I do think they will use things logically. The ST can and should be far greater than almost all comic book franchises, including Avengers.

How the heck is Star Wars better than the Avengers? lol come on now.

The prequels were filled with bad dialogue, bad acting, terrible fight scenes, bad filmmaking, just all around nonsense. Even the comics weren't that good.

There are at least 2 or 3 Superhero movies that already blows away the prequels. And the Avengers is definitely on the level of the old trilogy as well.

This could be a good approach considering a large chunk of the viewing audience are not going to be hardcore fangeeks. Your average filmgoer will have a level of interest in the movies stemming from some level of knowledge of the events in the OT and PT that comes from a more casual viewing experience. Throwing a whole bunch of obscure references into the films that would require them to go home and look up everything is *not* going to work. Most people have very short attention spans and very little time to go hunting through various materials looking for major references to events that occurred off-screen.

Just got a call from Bob Iger. He said that he knows what you want, he can see it in your eyes...and you're gonna take it and you're gonna like it - you naughty fanbase, you.

Avengers is absolutely not on the level of the OT. The only comic films on that level are the new Batman films. SW has a depth and richness that Avengers can't even touch upon. And I say this as a huge Avengers' fan. I've read nearly every comic from 1963, you really can't compare the two.

Disney is surely scouring the internet for ideas as we speak. So write some good ideas, people.

I remember actually reading on a sports board once a bunch of guys who were convinced that the team's general manager came to the board for ideas.

I just hope Disney's idea of "Family Orientated" differs from George's "Kid Friendly" Crap!!

There obviously will be references to the old movies, but I think you are right that these should stand on their own to some degree. You shouldn't need a degree in SW to enjoy them

Something Kafkaesque, nonsensical with no possible resolution. Maybe a Jedi in full force psychosis trying to build a light saber in a dark lit room for two hours straight while listening to a long lost John Williams score. Call it "Balance" staring Erich von Stroheim.

But seriously, I, and others, want a series more in tune with the times. A tad more nihilistic, darker. A more philosophical look into the nature of "good and evil".

Perhaps a French or Russian writer/director can do it? Maybe get Tarkovsky's ghost to introduce a more serious narrative. Actually, that sounds like a good idea LOL. Maybe tap Alan Moore? I'd pay fifty dollars to see that in the theaters.

To hell with the times. I want "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away". The Times are what THE STAR WARS blasted to bits in the 70s. Cinema was very nihilistic and dark then.

Don't you see that Star Wars is the antidote to nihilism? Are we watching the same movies here?

as long as the acting is good, the dialogue is meant for people older than 6 years old(unlike much of the PT) and they don't go crazy with CGI just because they can, I will be happy.

It's been done. It was called "The Dark Knight."

I have to diagree with you there. While good, the New Batman films are not on the same level as SW IMO and this is coming from a huge Batman fan. I grew up with the Bat, collected the comics, thought Miller's Dark Knight was awesome, but the films still left me a little disappointed. They don't effect me the way SW does that's for sure. I definitely couldn't watch them over and over again.

Km not going to be one of those angry bitter star wars fans when the disney set of movies is done, I already have the films I watch. There is nothing Disney could do to make me hate the GL6 movie George already completed. People need not to make fans feel low or inferior for liking the disney trilogy. Its a new generation of fans & they should be able to enjoy star wars their own way.

As long as Disney does not turn around and sell Star Wars to 20th Century Fox I'm a happy camper & the disney trilogy will remain in the Lion King, Snow White, Little Mermaid fold of movies I'm content with that.

Yes indeed but the story can be told in a less childish manner. People can handle it, having the target audience be 6-10 year olds with 'traditional family values' in mind squanders so much potential (this was Lucas' way of thinking).Think if every film ever made was done with that in mind. Even his target audience with the prequels are older now. They need to utilize darker more adult philosophical themes and all will be well (in my opinion). Even if they make a run of the mill sci fi film like the avengers it will be squandering tons of potential. I want epic ground breaking material, i'm tiered in general of wasting 20 dollars at the movies for sub par films, when it comes to Star Wars I think we should all demand the best and for many of us the prequels were far from the best - mainly because of the childish feel to the films.

    I hope not.

Part of the greatness is finding out what happens next, not having a tantrum about getting what you want.

And, many of us love the PT just as much. Here we go again.

Who cares about the PT anyway? It's been filmed, released, and is out there. This is a new series of films and George Lucas, Kathleen Kennedy, and whoever else involved, are under *no* obligation to make you, me, or any fan "happy." Part of watching films is that it is *our* job as audience members to let the filmmakers tell the story they want to tell how they want to tell it.

I, personally, am sick and tired of every contemporary film having to "darken" or "gritty" up the characters. The problem lies with the audience. Why do "adult themes" need to be "dark" or brooding?

It's only squandered potential if you demand more of the films than they, as existant creative works, are designed or willing to give. Just because a person carries around a cynical worldview shouldn't mean that said person is incapable of holding childlike wonder and amazement. And "traditional family values" is a phrase loaded with politicized propaganda. It means nothing to the discussion at hand.

I'm not going to debate Lucas being out of touch with both his fan base and modern culture. What I will debate is whether or not Disney will make the same mistakes. They can tell whatever story they want to tell but if its anything like episodes 4 and 5 then I'll be hounding them for a refund. I'm sick and tiered of seeing run of the mill films that pander to the lowest common denominator, as in, being shallow and cheesy. Even worse is when this happens with 'family values' in mind. A film can be disgustingly violent, full of unnecessary gore and still be cheesy. Adult themes in that regard don't make or break a film - when I say adult themes I'm talking about deeper philosophical issues being addressed. More realism. You know as well as I, in reality, the conflict between good and evil is more complex than as portrayed in the prequels. This doesn't mean we need to sacrifice class and hope they make "space porn" with a texas chain saw massacre twist it means Lucas's world view, which was projected onto film in the prequels, was extremely outdated and unplugged with reality. Lucas himself said he wanted to appeal to family values, it's the entire reason he chose Disney. He's basically put hand cuffs on any future Star wars films and in the end we're more likely than not going to either end up with more of Lucas moral absolutism or some made for mass consumption garbage targeted to children and the lowest common denominator- people who think Twilight is a great vampire story. I hope I'm wrong but I'm, rather naively, still expecting Disney to shoot for making a ground breaking series that's better than anything we've seen. Many of us don't want average, don't want Saturday morning cartoon Christian morals on film, don't want to spend our hard earned money on more garbage. Film in general these days in a bad state of affairs,I personally want something groundbreaking not another Avengers or Ironman or X-Men type film. It's all garbage. We should demand more of Star Wars!

But, Star Wars isn't Art House. I'd love to see some more Stanislaw Lem on screen a la "Solaris". I loved "Sunshine" - a great sci fi adventure/philosophical study. I believe in those kinds of films, I'm just not sure Star Wars is as "serious" and ponderously staid as some people think. This isn't "Ten Commandments."

It appears we will just have to agree to disagree on this matter.

Btw, I'd kill to have someone do up a proper live action Captain Harlock series full of emotional upheaval, sadness, and philosophical analysis of moral choices. I do feel some space opera lends itself quite well to allegorical study, but I think Star Wars should never become too "heavy."
