I feel I should add that, as someone with no investment at all in Tolkien's works (I blame the freaky cartoon that repulsed me as a 3rd grader) and only knowing the movies, I liked the bunny sled. It was far above many of the sillier things in Narnia or Potter, for certain.

In fact, my only problem with that sequence is that he seemed to keep luring the Orcs away from the heroes, then *back* in front of (or parallel to) their escape path. I mean, what part of "drawing them away" did he not understand? Where was he going?

He was probably just driving in a circle. I would think that the very nature of the bunny sled limits the kind of terrain it can travel on, so there weren't a lot of options there.

Yeah, the geography in that whole sequence was all wrong. Including the SECRET TUNNEEEEEELLLL to Rivendell, which starts on a plain and ends (after what was clearly only several minutes' worth of march) up in the mountains.

I suspect Radagast began to slip back into "loon mode" as soon as his bunny sled hit the open country. Still, a poor job at leading the orcs away from the company is at least enough to keep them busy. Nonetheless, that's no excuse for the geography failure.

The bunny sled is cool. Just as it's no leap for me to imagine Radagast behaving as Jackson makes him prior to his realisation, I'm quite happy believing there are rabbits in Middle-earth capable of great speed and when united, strength. Plus, there's that little moment when Radagast is running back to his sled from Dol Guldur and one the rabbits is seen thumping it's hind leg on the ground in anticipation. Such a delightful touch. :p

So this opens on Boxing Day in Australia. Is this is as terrible as the reviews suggest?

I've not seen any reviews saying it was terrible, seems generally considered a 3 star movie. Most reviews I've seen bash the HFR and the length of the movie but little else.

Yes. Sadly didn't drop below TPM's 57% on RT, though.

Does have a 42% Top Critics rating though. So that's one small victory :p

I was disappointed when one of my favorite podcasts (Slate Culture) trashed it. Their movie critic called the HFR, "Eye stabbing."
Overall I'd say critics who give it a fail on a pass/fail are being way too curmudgeonly. Of course RT's methodology of converting reviews is sketchy at best.

Yes, I thought it made the film look like a BBC production (especially given the actors who were in it :p ). The beginning looked like it was on fast-forward and Bilbo was running around really fast in his house.

But it got better later, indoor sequences didn't really work IMO. Certainly the 3D wasn't noticeable given the smooth transition, but I will compare it with IMAX to see how that matches up.
