Amph Can you name 5 trilogies that didn't let you down?

Inspired by Tunick's plan to watch Toy Story 3, I got to thinking about trilogies. I came to the sad realization that outside of the Star Wars OT, Toy Story, and (arguably) BTTF, I couldn't name another trilogy that didn't ultimately fall flat by the 3rd movie (if not before).

I'm sure I'm mistaken, right? There are certainly more out there...

 

The Dollars Trilogy, if that counts as a trilogy.

And I, at least, wasn't let down by the LotR trilogy.

 

Oh yeah! I always knew them as The Man With No Name trilogy, but yeah. Those certainly did hold up well. In fact, that was one of those rare circumstances, like Toy Story 3, where the last film is the best of the lot.

Edit: By the 3rd ending of Return of the King, I was over it. I already didn't like The Two Towers very much. But to each his own, I guess.

The Indiana Jones Trilogy (Crystal Skull doesn't, doesn't count)
The Toy Story Trilogy
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

I almost went with The Godfather since I actually quite like the third one, but it has so many serious flaws that I wasn't sure it couldn't be counted as not "falling flat." Same with Die Hard; loved the first two, thought the third one was actually not that good.

Can we count the first three Bond films: Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger. That's a great trilogy, right there. Not till Thunderball does the franchise "fall flat."

And I would say Pirates, but I know some dislike the 3rd...which I did like. But to those, I argue, was the first really that great to begin with? In which case, it didn't let me down.

 

Oh, and Polanski's Apartment Trilogy! (Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby, The Tenant)

 

I agree with Rogue on The Godfather and Die Hard. And I don't think Lethal Weapon 3 was any good. I enjoyed 4, though.

I think RotJ held up fine, Ewoks notwithstanding.

I haven't seen the first 3. I can agree on Indiana Jones though Crystal Skull hurt so damned bad that I forgot to consider it a Trilogy. If it were a trilogy, I'd count it, though.

I've seen Rosemary's Baby. I had no idea there were movies on either side of it...

Anyone seen all of Oliver Stone's Vietnam Trilogy? Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July & Heaven and Earth. Something makes me suspect that Heaven and Earth would be a falling flat, but maybe not; I haven't actually seen it.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I really enjoy the first three Bourne movies. Legacy is awful, but I really like Identity, Supremacy, and Ultimatum.

 

Is it limited to movies?

If not, His Dark Materials.

 

You know, I missed Supremacy, but I have to say that I didn't care for Identity, but loved Ultimatum. So that's an example of a trilogy, in my opinion, that gets better as it goes. So even not loving Identity, it would qualify as not becoming disappointing by the third film.

 

Actually, I agree on the Bourne movies. For what they are, they actually do get better each time. Props. I forgot about them.

 

I have a friend who has been insisting I read these books and I still haven't gotten around to it. But yeah, why keep it to movies?
