If we're going to have Imperial remnants, why not Separatist remnants?

I think the Rebel Alliance was basically the OT version of "separatists."

They existed... They'd be the Separatist Holdouts and apparently ultimately joined the Rebel Alliance.

I don't know if the Empire will still be around but things from the Empire still need to be around. Star Destroyers, Tie Fighters, AT-AT's, Imperial sympathies etc. An older Veers would be cool.

An octogenarian Veers wouldn't exactly be the most exciting thing in a Star Wars film

Well, if you cut off the head, the body usually dies, too, no?

But, yeah, sure. It really makes sense to say something as big as a galactic empire would be able to survive all these years under some hierarchy or whatever.

As long as someone charismatic steps up, the Empire could still be there 30 years later

Because sepratists sucked, were thick as **** and couldn't tie their own shoe laces without a bit of manipulation from Sidious.

"Luke didn't mention the Clone Wars in ANH. GL must have added that mention in 2004."

I hope the Empire is still at large. Just because your leader and a huge battlestation is gone doesn't automatically mean everything falls apart. That would be highly unrealistic. There's got to be a chain of command that's after Palps in case of Worst Case Scenario numero uno: Palps dies.

I want Plaguies to be in the movies

The opening scroll should let us know where things stand, but if Luke and the gang are in it, I would think that the Empire we knew is gone, if there is still some still fighting it would be like the Japanese and Germans that kept fighting after both countries surrendered, minimal and sidelined. This was an all or nothing battle for the Emperor one he thought he was going to win, he deployed the biggest assets he had at Endor.
The leadership of the Empire was wiped out in one day, no one regional governor would have had the power at that time to bring it all together. However if one grouped as many assets as he could find and ran, they could rebuild in secret, but it wouldn't be the empire anymore, it would be a group that challenges Republic.

The added end scene in ROTJ showed them celebrating on Corscant pulling down a huge statue of the Emperor, and all the other scenes on different planets, if the empire was still in control that would never have happened, the win at Endor caused a galaxy wide revolution, one the empire did not survive.

You don't think that an ambitious Imperial leader on Coruscant won't rise up and then crush the uprising?

There should at least b a remnant of the Empire. They could say that the fighting continued for a few years after RotJ.

If we're right in our suspicions and we are treated to a reunion of the Big 3, as played by the original cast, then I'd have to agree with Echo, here. Regardless of how widespread and powerful the Galactic Empire was at its height, I just don't find it realistic to see it still standing strong 30-40 years post-Endor.

I dunno, I'm kind of hoping to see rogue factions using beat-up old Imperial tech. I'm itching to see a lot of smugglers and the seedy galactic underworld this time around. I imagine there were some on Nal Hutta who didn't take Jabba's demise too well. Nature abhors a vacuum. With the right criminal mastermind stepping into that vacuum, all of our heroes' efforts to create a New Republic could be brought to ruin.

The Empire will be back in some form, no doubt, but it's power will be significantly less than it was in the OT.
