The issue with the republican party isn't that they became the party of the tea party. But they listened to those with the loudest voices that had nothing to gain and nothing to add to governing. They simply wanted the govt to stop functioning with no care what happens. Its like the they are the crazy neighbor that wants everything to burn unless he gets his way. The problem that the party made was listening to them. They were not the majority, they were a small vocal minority. Instead of letting the people tear the party down they should have dismissed them openly and allowed for themselves to get more people reelected that are republican. Instead they put in the crazy candidates. Mark my words, 2016 will mean the end of the tea party. Listen we never had a party within a party before because it didn't work. Now you will see the same thing. These vocal groups don't know a thing about governing. But that is normal from the loud mouth in the room. Ask him to explain himself and his position and he won't or can't.

It stands for an emotional rant against the imagined liberal bogeyman, just like how Hamas uses Israel and Iran uses "the Great Satan" as imagined bogeymen.

The further details about the failed coup against John Boehner are pretty remarkable, and mostly in a crimes against intelligence sort of way.

This is not quite the stuff of political legend. Now those representatives have to live with their stupidity for the rest of their terms, which just happens to be the entirety of them (since this all happened on the first day of the new Congress).

On the bright side, if we're lucky, it'll only be for two years.

Have we always had such idiots in our Congress throughout our history, or is this mostly a recent thing?

Well the Tea Party didn't exist back then, so if they're the problem then it's a recent thing.

That was a representative of a Southern state attacking someone for making a humane and reasonable policy recommendation.

So, again, yes. Pretty much the same.

Mitch McConnell was awful this morning on Stephanopoulos. He really comes across as a lightweight, pivoted away from every question on Hagel and gave the same recycled answers on the debt ceiling. Really hard to grow your base when the leadership cannot articulate your platform and plan forward, especially a week after being taken to the woodshed by the Democrats. That is assuming that the party has a platform, which is becoming increasingly questionable.

He knows Hagel will be confirmed. There's not much to gain there.

Yeah, but he'll have a far rougher road on the way to confirmation than Kerry will.

He'll get questioned more than Kerry, but the end result will be the same.

I just don't understand how anyone who has chosen politics as their profession could go along with this line of thinking that the GOP has taken, and by re-electing Boehner and McConnell into leadership positions, the signal is that they're OK with it. They've been defeated, and most of the time embarrassingly so, at just about every opportunity since 2008, outside of the midterms. Sure, they'll fight Hagel, and they'll lose again. Then they'll lose the debt ceiling debate, lose more public support if they line up against gun control legislation. If they try to fight the Ginsberg SC replacement when she's indicated she'll retire in 2014, it will be stupid on an unconscionable level, but they've shown they want to fight everything, so it wouldn't be surprising. It's like nobody realizes that these losses aggregate into making the party a national joke.

Then they'll go into the midterms with one message, because there's no substance to be found: get out and vote against Obama. And we've seen how that works.

And I'll get off my soap box now.

It does seem that the entire depth and substance of the Republican Party message has been "We don't like Obama."

OK, we get it. Can we step away from the elementary school playground now and instead of playing "he's not my friend anymore," talk about some actual issues affecting the country?

Obama came into office promising to be a "uniter" and Republicans couldn't allow him to succeed in becoming one because it would make themselves look bad in comparison. So what do they do? They move the political goalposts and spend their every effort at sabotaging his presidency in order to deny the appearance of consensus. Hence all the ranting about socialism and big government takeover.

I like Chris Christie--not that I agree with him on everything, I definitely don't, but I like his no-bull**** attitude and his putting the people of his state above politics when Hurricane Sandy hit. I would like to see him run in 2016. But I was listening to some commentary today about how he would never get the Republican nomination because all the opposition would have to do would be to roll out pictures of him shaking hands with Obama.

That's ****ing pathetic, and again, elementary school playground. "You hung out with him? You're not my friend anymore."

Isn't that why Charlie Crist lost to Marco Rubio?

Crist hugged Obama in early 2009. After that, his popularity among the Florida Republicans went into freefall.

And now Crist is a Democrat.

Reince Priebus: help me Internet, you're my only hope

The Republican Party is basically asking the Internet for help on how to win elections... it's just a survey, including a couple text boxes where they ask you to be very specific on how they can possibly ever win an election again.
(They do ask for your email, but I just gave them my old AIM email which I never check, don't feel like having the RNC spam me.)

I thought about just telling them how wrong they've been the last 4 years on almost everything, but I decided to type up something a little more constructive and specific, honestly telling them what they'd have to do for me to consider voting Republican:
