EUC Character of the Year Awards

Welcome to what will hopefully become an annual event here in the Expanded Universe Community, the EUC Character of the Year Awards!​

This is an event for celebrating our favorite characters, and their accomplishments, from the past year in the novels, comics, video games, TV shows and more. In order to be eligible a character does have to meet a few requirements.​

​

1. The character must owe a significant portion of its history to the Expanded Universe. So favorites from the films like Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Leia Organa, Nute Gunray and Jar Jar Binks(just to name a few) are not eligible to be voted for. Other characters named in the films, like say Darth Plagueis that were little more than named in he films would be eligible based on virtually everything we know about them having originated in the EU.​

2. Only Expanded Universe characters that have had some sort of reasonably significant role in the calendar year of 2012 are available to the voted for. For example a character like Grand Admiral Osvald Teshik, who had a new short story added to the universe in the Essential Guide to Warfare, would be eligible to be chosen based on the new material added about him in the 2012 calendar year.​

Kal Skirata would be an example of a character that is not eligible for inclusion this year. While he had fresh artwork in the Essential Guide to Warfare, nothing new was added to his character or story.​

If someone wishes to include a character that may be considered a fringe candidate that characters credentials for inclusion will be reviewed by the CotY Awards team and a ruling will be made on if that character has had enough new material in 2012 to be included in the voting process.​

3. You are allowed to vote for up to five different characters, though you don’t have to pick five if you don’t wish. If you feel there were only two decent EU characters this past year your more than welcome to vote for just those two if you wish.​

​

Overall voting will be tabulated with a points system so be sure to label your selections in order of preference. For instance your #1 selection will get 5 points; your #5 selection will only get one point.​

Your selections(votes) can be forwarded via PM to the EUC CotY Awards sock. Please feel free to discuss them publically in this thread as well. All selections must be in by February 11th, 2012 and the winners will be announced that week leading into the new EUC elections.​

4. As seen, there will also be one additional category that is simply “Best New EU Character of 2012”. This category is only open to EU characters that first appeared in the year of 2012. This character can of course be included in your ‘Character of the Year’ selections as well as this category.​

Vestara Khai



It was a big year for the Sith Apprentice Vestara Khai. With the conclusion to Fate of the Jedi one huge portion of Vestara's life came to a conclusion, while the next mysterious chapter began. Now a battle hardened Lady of the Sith, Vestara has faced and defeated both Jedi and Sith. Her new alliance with a Sith Meditation Sphere promises that she will likely be a thorn in the side of our heroes for years to come.

Is she cut out to be our EUC Character of the Year?

I'm glad you included Turman as I felt bad I had to leave him out. "Scut" was a really excellent character it was such a welcome difference to see a Vong that was not in the villain role.

We want to thank everyone for their contributions thus far. Everything looks awesome!

Unfortunatly Darth Plagueis would not be eligible for the Best New Character of 2012 Category. His appearances in works like The Tenebrous Way short story from 2011 as well as his bio and picture in the Star Wars Encyclopedia, and even his mention in ROTS would not qualify him as a new EU character introduced in 2012.

Sorry for this confusion. Anyone who selected Darth Plagueis is very welcome to make another selection if they would like to.

Of course Darth Plagueis is still eligible for the main category of Best EU Character of 2012.

It was a big year for Voort, what with the band geting back together for Mercy Kill. And Voort learned a valuable life lesson about the Yuuzhan Vong along the way.

Is Voort ready to be the EUC Character of the Year?

 

Darth Plagueis was more of a name than an actual character back then. If anything, 2012 counts as the year he made his character debut.

But fine, I suppose I'll just have to think of some other character to put in place as the Best New Character of 2012. Perhaps Bo-Katan? Her role in Darth Maul: Shadow Conspiracy is vital.

At times like these, I wish I had read more of the EU books that came out last year, especially that new Dawn of the Jedi comic. Unfortunately, my enthusiasm for the EU is not what it used to be so I wasn't really interested in buying more books. James Luceno's novel re-elevated my intrigue in the EU, but not enough it seems...

The awards team actully discussed this before the game started as well. We felt that he should be inlcuded in the main contest, despite the movie origins of his name, for that exact reason. He's just had too many other appearances, from the Encyclopedia, the the Essential Guide to the Force, to his Hero Click like Action Figure to be considered a brand new character. Sorry for the confusion.

Other administrative notes:

Darth Tenebrous appeared in the same Matt Stover short story in 2011 that Darth Plagueis did, as such would not be eligible for the new character category. Sorry for the confusion this creates as we realize that the short story was somewhat obscure.

Darth Maul owes his creation to his role in Star Wars Episode 1 and thus is not eligible for any category in the CotY Awards.

Being that this is the first year of this event we are still working out some of the kinks. Be patient with us please
