A Song of Ice and Fire is good, but not great IMO. I haven't read A Dance with Dragons yet, though - still waiting on the paperback. Which, last I saw, had been delayed again. I much prefer Sanderson. And Modesitt. And Tolkien. And several others, too :p

Which reminds me, I recently read Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series, which was quite good.

    tom ... why? :p

RJ, that kind surprises me. I didn't figure that was your type of thing. I read the first two books a while ago, and I have the third on hold at the library ... which means I'll get to it the 2nd of never :p They weren't bad.

I like well-developed worlds, and I like the concept its based on. Also, it reminds me a lot of the Dresden books, which are similarly quite good.

alternative history is, like, the wackest literary pursuit imaginable. except maybe for time travel-dependent alternative history

Harry Turtledove? Robert Conroy? You're argument is invalid. HT's Southern Victory series is amazing.

Wheel of Time definitely gets better as the series progresses. Though I can't tell if that's Jordan getting better at his craft or just Nynaeve and Egwene becoming less annoying.

About halfway through book 2 at the moment.

Maybe it's just a mistaken impression, but from reading the dust covers, it seems like Turtledove has a huge fixation on "What If This Big Racist Won And Ruled Everything" stories. Suffice it to say I do not see the appeal.

I tried reading Wheel of Time wayyy back in the day and couldn't get into it. I wasn't much of a fan for how Jordan wrote the female characters either. He was fairly good at world building though.

Mike when have i ever done anything based on your approval?

Harry Turtledove is a terrible writer. Sure, his grand ideas are fun, but actually reading his novels are chores.

Yeah, Turtledove is the alternate history equivalent of Mark Millar.

It is my pleasure to constantly recommend Sanderson :p Glad you're enjoying it!

    RC-1991 Yay, you're reading it!

Team Padme Nice! tbh, I haven't been able to keep track of which is which since the NJO (all those one-word titles! :p ). How is it? I still need to read the last one in the series; never got around to it ...
