Pretty much this. TPM is a bad Starwars film but Clones was just bad period. While ESB is not just the best Starwars films but one of the best films period

 

Agreed on both counts. AotC was laughably bad. ESB was the pinnacle.

You will notice that in my post above, I have the dramatic cliffhanger episodes of each trilogy ranked as the two highest, then I have the quest episodes from each trilogy ranked next (they start out slow and small and end big and fast), then I have the setting episodes (prologue and epilogue ) from each trilogy ranked last.

One caveat on that ranking system: I actually like all six of the films for different reasons, and don't believe that there's a single 'poor' film out of the lot. However, when asked to numerically rank the films in terms of favoritism, that's how things shake out.

Here's my updated list since I had a marathon session with them recently.

1.) Revenge of the Sith
2.) The Empire Strike Back
3.) A New Hope
4.) Attack of the Clones
5.) The Phantom Menace
6.) Return of the Jedi

The gaps between them are so small though that I don't find any of them disappointing. I can watch them all back to back and remain exhilarated all the way through, just like watching The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and The Dark Knight Trilogy.
