this writing staff ama is pretty fun. joel is doing one later today.

 

I really loved this episode. It was very dense. It will take a few viewings to soak everything in.

I won't say more until West Coasters can see it. I'm thrilled my favorite show is back!

it was a fun start to the season. i laughed a lot. can't ask for much more.

 

Fred Willard is a great Pierce.

 

Fun start, feels a little more forced than it used to, but I'm keen to see how this season develops.

 

i wonder if they're going to bring fred willard back in for the episodes that were filmed after chevy chase left.

 

That would be great. Someone on another board made an interesting point about this episode: The moves were (mostly) right on a surface level, but they didn't coalesce or serve a unified theme in the way Harmon's episodes tended to. It was more a series of gags.

 

hmmm, i don't really think that's true. it didn't come together as well as some of the better episodes perhaps, but it was on par with a lot of them. and i felt it did coalesce around the theme of the group's (particularly abed and annie's) fear of change, the future, and leaving greendale.

 

Yeah I'd agree. It wasn't excellent, but it was really good. I was actually kind of impressed.

 

I'll admit: the cold open threw me. After hearing about Up All Night's plan to switch to a multi-camera format with a live audience I was worried that Community had done the same thing for a few seconds. Then I calmed down and realized what was happening.

 

Was Amed's daydreams with everyone in glasses and a laugh track a Big Bang Theory parody, or more a generic sitcom thing?

It looked like a parody of BBT (especially the colors or whatever), but it was probably meant as a parody of current (CBS) multi-cam sitcoms in general.

As someone who grew up watching Muppet Babies as a child that part nearly killed me hearing the theme song.

 

Oh my god, I missed the Greendale Human Being the first time around.

The episode had strong character growth for Jeff where he was fighting hard to win seven balls. He wasn't going to take that ice cream course without the others.
