Madness. You don't know what you're missing.

I don't care about Walking Dead, Mad Men, TBBT, Dr. Who or reality TV in general.

Even then it's gonna be difficult to watch something if it's not on a screen

really? do you suffer from some strange affliction that only allows you to watch things on screens?

I was entertained last night, watching a show without any screens. The future has truly arrived.

I can watch sitcoms, because sitcoms don't have an overarching story. It's always a new situation. And sitcoms primarily are for the laughs, anyway, not the story. Or I could watch cop/detective shows, where there's a new case every week, although I don't follow any of those. But I can't commit to following a storyline over a long time. I tend to fall off the wagon at some point, because I forgot to watch an episode or something and then I don't bother catching up.

As for the point about the possibilities of longer storylines versus movie format compact storytelling: yes, in theory that's a good point, but very rarely can the writers sustain the same level of quality writing for several seasons of a show. You watch the first episodes and you think it's interesting and intriguing etc, and eventually it stagnates and becomes uninteresting or boring. You set yourself up for disappointment.

You know, I think most people would argue that sitcoms and procedurals are exactly the same thing every week, with only superficial variations.

No. Sitcoms certainly don't have to be.

Sci-fi TV series are by definition underbudgeted.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. It's rare, but Star Trek TNG and The X-Files are sci-fi shows that enjoyed comfortably high ratings and had nice budgets to go with it. If you mean that they can't compare to movie special effects, I'd disagree there too. TNG, DS9, and Voyager (maybe Enterprise) could have special effects work only surpassed by the highest-budgeted films of the times; the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica and Firefly are other examples.

And, just to Juliet316 this up, even Doctor Who has managed high production values as of late.

That make up (by the brilliant Michael Westmore), is far better than say the pilot of Babylon Five (I love Babylon Five, but... yeah, the prosthetic make - up of the aliens left something to be desired).

Edit: That was in reply to SuperWatto
