PT Jar Jar and Senators

This is something I never got about Attack of the Clones:
1. Anyone can replace a Senator, even an idiot like Jar Jar?
2. Anyone can pose as a Senator?
3. Jar Jar is allowed to pass sweeping legislation in place of a Senator, after being obviously duped into it:
Mas Amedda: (To Palpatine) "If only Senator Amidala were here"- Palpatine and Mas Amedda look at Jar Jar. Jar Jar bows head sadly. (Audience laughs)

was there a special showing for preteens in the theater when you saw this?

1) if a senator chooses someone to represent her in her absense i'm sure she could choose anyone if she wants, as long as she knows the buck stops with her

2) anyone sentient yes

3) it would appear so.

"Following the Battle of Naboo, the new alliance between the Naboo and Gungans expanded to include a Gungan Representative to support the Senator for Naboo in the Galactic Senate. Binks served as Gungan Representative in 22 BBY before the outbreak of the Clone Wars, along with now-Senator Amidala"

1. He didn't 'replace' a senator
2. He didn't 'pose as' a senator
3. He didn't 'pass sweeping legislation' - he proposed it and the Senate passed it

Naboo/Gungan union

 

Jar Jar showed great leadership on the battlefield in A Phantom Menace.

 

Yes. Because nearly losing the battle and needing to be saved by little Ami was the actions of a brilliant tactical mind...

 

Hmm, it was accepted that the Gungans would probably lose the battle as they were vastly outnumbered. That's why it was intended as a diversion. Besides, a good battlefield tactician does not necessarily make for a good politician. Not that I am saying that Jar Jar was a good politician, it's just that the two things are unrelated.

 

Jar jar is a great politician in the clone wars.

 

1. Jar Jar Binks was Padme's representative, which I take to mean that in the event that she was off on some mission or doing something in which she couldn't be on Coruscant, JarJar would act in her place.

2. He didn't pass sweeping legislation; he merely proposed the Senate give palpatine emergency powers until the crisis is over. Since palpatine was popular, he was given them by the senate..

 

Blaming Binks for Senate Approval is the same as blaming Finus Volorum for its corruption.
Hyperbole.

I think Jar-Jar has probably been discussed to death at this point, but my "problem" with him being chosen as a Senator was there as no time in TPM that he came across as being very intelligent at all. Good hearted? Sure. Well meaning? Sure. Loyal? Yes. But basically, kind of dopey, kind of foolish, arguably not very bright, kind of clownish. Most of his battlefield "heroics" were the result of sheer dumb luck or lunacy. So how does THIS guy become the best Naboo/the Gungans have to offer?

That being said, there have been lots of less than stellar characters elected to high office on our planet alone! So maybe you can rationalize Jar-Jar's ascendancy. Maybe. Sorta. I guess.

Darth - Your call, clearly. I'm not defending the comments you referenced. All I am saying is that if we are going to have folks posting examples of where they feel current politicians look stupid, I hope wide latitude will be granted across the political spectrum, although, frankly, no offense, I can't see the benefit to that, regardless of political affiliation. We have a whole forum dedicated to politics, yes - and it gets pretty ugly over there, pretty regularly.

Well, to me the OP seems to be saying that there's some sort of intelligence level required to be an elected official. I'm pointing out that there isn't, and that Jar-Jar seems a whole lot more open to compromise and negotiation than most of his contemporaries here on Earth are.
