why couldn't princess leia just send the death star plans over the holonet or by faster-than-light transmission? There would be no need for the destruction of the Tantive IV then...

Unless the Imps control the Holonet and would be looking for the plans.

And how did they know that plans were missing. There's got to be thousands of copies of them!

I'm assuming the Empire would be able to trace where the beamed transmission was sent to, and find where the Rebels are hiding.

That still doesn't explain anything. They trace the Tantine IV too.

Per the radio drama, Tantive 4 thought they were in the clear when they jumped to lightspeed towards Tatooine. They were wrong when they found the Star Destroyer Devastator jumped out of hyperspace behind them in Tatooine's system.

It's a good thing they didn't go straight to Yavin's system.

But Vader knew Tantive 4 received transmissions from rebel spies. They would've known if Yavin's 4 received those transmissions too.

But, this is all just my assumption. Whether correct or not, who knows?

Why not just literally blast the plans out to EVERYONE in the galaxy? Every planet, every news group, everyone.

It'd get sent to the spam folder and no one would read it. :p

Seriously though, the internet didn't exist in 1977 (at least not to the public), so it probably didn't occur to Lucas that something like the HoloNet would exist and be in common usage.

Could you imagine if the death star plans did get out to everyone in the galaxy though? It would be crazy!

Open source Death Star. I wonder if the galaxy would get polite.

Because of EULA they couldn't. :p . The Empire frowned on piracy and they would have lost their holonet access.

That's the secondary plotline of Darksaber- Hutts have stolen the plans of the Death Star.

At one point it's said "If anyone with enough cash can build a Death Star and go around blowing up planets, no-one will be safe."

    Sadly- it wasn't handled well.

They should have sent the plans to Julian Assange.

they should have made a copy and placed a copy on two ships. That way the Empire would have to chase one ship while the other got away. DECOY style.

It would have sucked if Rupert Murdoch got a hold of the plans.

I once saw a website that described how movie and tv plots would have been changed if the Internet existed at the time the material was made. I wonder how the Internet's existence would have influenced the ANH plot. I suspect that it is possible that Lucas may have altered the way the plans were captured and disseminated. For instance, I am sure the method the Bothans would have used involved hacking. I think in Star Wars it is called slicing.

Because then we wouldn't be able to have such a fun movie and because its a film that after 30 plus years of picking at it theres a lot of stuff that just doesn't make sense.

Hey why is there sound in space during star wars?.... For the same reason :)

I don't think Obi Wan had the technology to receive a message on Tattoine, and I'm not sure how Leia would have known how to contact him. He was living as an isolated hermit at the time of ANH.

Obviously they didn't want the imperials to know they had the plans, and that they had a potential weakness to exploit

Wow R2D2 is really just a mobile flash drive!

All they had to do was put the plans behind a locked door, as we see later in the film, when on Tatooine, Stormtroopers knock on the door, it's locked, give up and move onto the next one.

The rebels had the plans for all of 10mins and found a weakness - Death Star enema! Why with all their resourecs did the Imperial technicians/engineers not find this?

Given that it's only 2 meters wide and protected by ray shields which necessitated the Alliance using proton torpedoes and led one Rebel pilot to say that it was impossible to hit; i'd assume that the Empire probably thought it wasn't a weakness.
