After discussion in Comms and the MS, it has been decided that acronyms relating to and containing abbreviations for disallowed words no longer need to be starred out. (Examples: BS, FML, WTF etc.) Previously, the accepted usage of such acronyms was to star out the letter of an offending word, as in "B*" or "LM*AO".

Please remember that words on the Disallowed Words List must still be starred out in their entirety. Further, please remember that while these acronyms are allowed, flaming another user still isn't. So be mindful of how you address other users on the boards.

Swears in acronyms? What's next, only starring out the first letter of offending words?

I think you've effectively demonstrated the only context in which such an acronym is allowed. ;)

While seemingly inconsequential, this is a sad change for the boards.

What is the reasoning behind the decision?

I can't speak for the administration but look at the people who post here. Most of us are over 30 I think we can Handle a WTF every now and again.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's an age thing (although most of us in MS these days are in the 20-30 range), I'd say it's mostly due to the fact that many of us agreed having to post a censored acronym like "B*" seems awkward and unnecessary.

I just think it's decadent is all.

It's another step in the direction of having spelled-out profanity, and while I understand that that will never happen, I think it makes more sense for members to be encouraged to find ways to express themselves without using profanity at all.

Profanity (initialed, starred-out, whatever) doesn't make a community better or stronger. If anything, it makes it worse IMO and I can't think of any good reason why this rule would be changed...

Truly the fall of western civilization as we know it is predicated on the allowance of an S when preceded by a B.

The more a word is used, the less powerful it becomes. I find profanity quite useful, if used sparingly.

    - Anakin Skywalker, meet Obi-Wan Kenobi.
    - Where did you dig up that old fossil?
