I think the Mouth of Sauron's... mouth... is one of the most effective special effects I've ever seen. It's so simple, but so completely jarring it freaks me out even now.

I think the lack of tension has to do with Jackson failing to develop fleshed out characters you cared about. Thorin and his dwarves are just action hero props for the most part. You cared about the Fellowship and thus when danger was around you feared for them. I did care about Bilbo and so there was some tension when he was in danger but then again Jackson thinks the hobbits are weak otherwise you wouldn't have so many bits where they have to be saved by warriors.

Too many dwarves and not enough fleshing out of them. I can name several of them but not all of them. I can also tell you the relationships of some of them but nowhere near as good as LOTR.

There are a lot of dwarves, though. There were nine in the Fellowship, and they got more fleshed out as the movies went along.

Dwarves "not fleshed out"? As opposed to the book, in which, aside from Thorin and maybe Balin, they're basically just a list of names? o_O

Okay. The dwarves were fleshed out more in the movies than the books. But the dwarves were not as distinct as the Fellowship to me.

It helps that the Fellowship is way more diverse. The most of any race is Hobbits at four. Still, there's two whole more movies for some of the other dwarves to get some good screentime. I can see Bombur getting some good material, since I don't think he uttered one word in the entirety of AUJ. Gloin barely talks either. I'm sure they'll get their chance.

If so, Bilbo's mother has some serious explaining to do.

By the Valar! I hadn't seen that one coming... It certainly earned more than a chuckle on my part. Now I have this absurd image of the Necromancer and Bilbo, and the former going all "No, I am your maker" on the latter. Which would also be true in a way, given that Bilbo does carry Sauron's essence in the One Ring.

I know there's a Crack!Fic idea there somewhere, but for the life of me I don't think I'd be able to pull it of...

    Cheers,
    Lauré :)

I just came in here to use the phrase "fleshed out."

So...when is the EE being released?

That's... what I'm asking. If it supports that in the first place.

I wish they would say what the EE deleted scenes will be, so I know whether to buy now or wait until Christmas. :p

At least one of the deleted scenes will involve the Necromancer.

If I knew for sure there was going to be an EE (do we know that, yet?) then I would not buy the theatrical cut. So I suspect they're not going to confirm until the theatrical cut has been released.

I don't know what to do.

They'll sell more Blu-Rays if they hold off on an official announcement of an EE release.

Rent it, then buy the EE. An Evertonian and his money are not soon parted.
