Hey folks. I hope this warrants a thread, but if not please merge it with whatever the correct topic would be.

Anyways, I am a huge fan of the six Star Wars films, and I absolutely love the mythology that they have created. That being said, I have never cared about the expanded universe at all and I don't see that ever changing. From what I have seen, however, TCW seems to be much more in line with the films than the expanded universe and even seems to boast having the direct involvement of George Lucas himself. So, despite putting the show off (I only saw the film and a few odd episodes back in 2008) for quite a long time, the news of its cancellation actually has me intrigued and willing to give it a chance.

Before I do, however, I just have a couple questions. First: The 'Mortis' trilogy. What do you guys think of it (without spoiling anything)? I've heard very mixed things about it, but given the fact that the mythological elements of Star Wars are among my favorite aspects of the saga, it seems like something that would be right up my alley.

My second question involves Darth Maul. I am not exactly the type of person who likes resurrections as they more often than not come across as a cop out and undermine everything that happened before (though I would be open to a Darth Plagueis revival somewhere down the line, if a future film can do something interesting with the concept). So I guess what I'm asking is, how is Darth Maul's 'resurrection' handled? Does the story warrant his return?

Thank you in advance, guys! If there's anything else you'd want to tell a person considering diving in for their first time, I'd love to hear it :)

    1. I could not stand Mortis but if you liked the "Chosen One" prophecy in the prequels and you like uber-spiritual stories that address the concept of "destiny," you might like it. A lot of people who post here, did.

    2. I stopped watching during Season 4 because of Maul's resurrection and I took a long time to buy the Season 4 DVDs because Maul was on the cover. I won't say that his resurrection was handled well, but in the end it could have been much worse.

You've asked questions from season 3 and 4; I'd suggest you watch seasons 1 and 2 and see if you like them.

    1. For every person who hates Mortis (myself included) there's someone who loves it; it's all up to you on whether you'll enjoy it or not.

    2. No, the story doesn't warrant Maul's return. If I'm perfectly honest, the resurrection occurred at the same time TPM3D came out, so it was a publicity stunt, and a way to sell toys. However, the Season 5 Maul episodes are executed well. The Season 4 finale likewise. That being said, Brothers, the penultimate episode of Season 4 was absolutely dreadful. It's a mixed bag.

    Enjoy!

I'd say that you should definitely start watching it and see what you think. I think the series gets better each season, so if you don't like seasons one or two that much, it will be get better :)

    1. The Mortis trilogy definitely wasn't one of the best arcs in the series, but the second episode was quite good because of the fight scenes, but apart from that, the only thing that stood out from the arc was the scenery, because it looked really good.

    2. I think bringing Maul back was a brilliant idea, I know a lot of people weren't fond of the idea to begin with, but once you see the episodes he's in, you'll be amazed :) All five of the episodes he was in (not including 'Brothers') I gave a 9, 9.5 or 10 out of 10 because they were so good.

Watch the show, you will love it. At first I never saw the movie, and quit the show 1/2 through season 1. I came back after season 4 and rewatched everything and loved it. I am not happy with how things ended in season 5 for maul, but he certainly was awesome to have him back, such a great villain. you will love the show.. its an acquired taste.

The Mortis trilogy is very polarizing. People tend to either love it or hate it. Then again, a lot of very artistic things are like that - for example Tarantino movies or Prometheus. I'm pro-Mortis myself.

Bringing back Darth Maul was a bad idea saved by good execution. Sam Witwer's performance was really great, the Maul storylines were involving, and his final lightsaber battle was probably all in all the best lightsaber fight we've ever seen in Star Wars.

    1. I hated Mortis, but many people loved it. It's very polarizing. If the mere presence of mythology is enough to entertain you, there's no chance you won't be entertained. I'm not a fan of the kind of mythology involved, which includes the Chosen One prophecy, the balance of the Force, metaphysics and extremely heavy metaphor. I thought the Mortis trilogy had all the subtlety of a shotgun blast to the face. To me the Mortis trilogy is like watching a clip show of the saga and having TCW go "SEE! REMEMBER THIS?". There's all kinds of stupid involved, but even ignoring all of it, what other people found transcendent I found pretentious.

    2. Darth Maul's resurrection isn't handled at all, it's completely glanced over. It's pretty much just "he's back, deal with it." No, it was not at all warranted.

But I have to agree with anakinfansince1983, these events are way down the road. If you plan on watching the entire series, you'll have to make it through S1 and S2 first.

Thanks for the responses, guys. If I do end up watching it, it could be a while yet (I'm making my way through BSG at the moment). I know these events are further down the line, but I figured I'd ask because, if it seems like things begin to falter towards the end, I'm not sure if it'd be worth giving a go...

Still very much considering it, though.

    1) Mortis is mixed, but if you just decide to watch the first episode, Overlords and not the next two after it, you will be greatly pleased without giving anything away. It's certainly the arc that ties in most with the movies.

    2) Maul's return is well handled and well executed, though at first the idea was dubious at best - Witwer and the plot makes Maul's story one, if not the, best episodes in the series.

The show is very hit-and-miss. When it misses, it really whiffs. But when it hits, it hits hard. I'd recommend starting with some of the better arcs or episodes to get an idea of this series at its best. Starting with the Season One Malevolence arc (S01E02-04), the Season Two Geonosis arc (S02E05-08), the Season Three Citadel arc (S03E18-20), or the Season Four Umbara arc (S04E07-10) would all be a good way to get going with the show.

That guide is pretty helpful, though there are a few imperfections. Like Holocron Heist is not the continuation and resolution of Hostage Crisis. Hostage Crisis is the setup for Hunt for Ziro.

Also, the guide fails to highlight some great episodes, assuming that if they aren't central to overarching plots or film characters then they are not worth watching. I disagree. Like, I'd definitely recommend Lightsaber Lost. It is a solid stand-alone episode that I'd think fans of OT Jedi ideals and 80's Henson films would really enjoy. It is the one episode that my wife watched from beginning to end, and she's not even a TCW fan.

Padawan Lost and Wookie Hunt is another I'd call out, with Chewbacca's TCW cameo and seeing Bossk's species doing what they love. I'd think Empire Strikes Back fans would enjoy that two-parter given Chewie and the prminance of an OT species. Plus it strengthens the wookie's appearance in ROTS.

I'd also recommend Missing in Action. Very much a nod to ANH with a perceived nobody finding out they are far more important a person than they thought, and being thrust into an adventure.

    ---

Really, I'd suggest just watch the series in the chronological order. There are far more "must see" episodes than "skip 'em" episodes, so by that point I'd say you might as well watch the whole series. I don't see the point in watching around 70 episodes and skipping 30 others. Even the ones you're skipping could very well be episodes you personally enjoy, and many of the ones being skipped contain pieces of later story arcs. Like The Academy characters appear later in the series, in the must see Maul's Empire arc for example.

To be truthful I don't frequent 4Chan either. There's some things that you can see there... that should never be seen.

Also calling Mortis "ambiguously canon". Whether y'all like it or not, it's canon, it happened, and everyone remembers it (minus Anakin's vision of his future).

I only go for the Stat Wars threads, usually to see how everyone liked the episode or if someone is doing story time by posting the comics and what have you, not for r34 of TCW.
