The opening crawl to RotK says:
So it doesn't seem that the Empire have been working on the DS for several years. Rather it seems that the work has just BEGUN.
Also the DS2 is bigger than the first so more to build. Add to that, the SL is operational.
Lastly, Palpatine was coming there to oversee the FINAL stages of construction. If they needed anothr 2-3 years to finish it then was Palpatine just going to sit there for all that time?

No, from what the movie says, it seems that there wasn't that much time left before the DS would be complete, a couple of weeks up to 1-2 months.
In all, it speaks of a construction time FAR shorter than 20 years.

    Bye for now.

They have begun construction, as it's not completed. There's no mention of time frames. It still could have been secretly started at any point. Depends on "a point of view" of the wording i suppose - like a lot of Star Wars plot!!

Also as it was nearing it's completion, do we know what was supposed to be i the missing pieces of the second Death Star? It could just be hanger/storage space - not requiring that much to finish off - just cladding really!

Here's what I want to know. Why is Princess Leia on a diplomatic mission to her home world? That's like Hillary Clinton saying she's on a diplomatic mission to the United States.

They weren't. Yavin (and later Hoth) was simply the most "important" base (being where many if not most of the senior command staff was), not the only base. You'll note, for example, that Mon Mothma, Adm Ackbar, General Madine, et al don't appear anywhere in the first two films, yet they obviously existed. Ackbar was probably with the main Alliance fleet. Mon Mothma, et al could have been there, or at another base, or off on some neutral planet like Aargau.

Well, for one thing. Luke surely didn't just sit on his rump during that year or so away. He was still studying and practicing on his own. He also needed to face some form of Trials to be officially knighted. Yoda apparently thought surviving his adventures and encounters while gone were sufficient to be passed in that regard.

Obi Wan never really paid much attention to droids to begin with, and had no reason to suspect that R2 was in fact Anakin's R2, as opposed to any of 10,000 other similar R2 units.

Oh so I guess the fact that R2 was accompanied by 3PO didn't jog his memory either....he was on Tatooine for 18 years by himself it's not like he had much else going on to make him forget two droids that he spent a MAJOR amount of time with :/

Because the Emperor was literally co-ordinating and controlling the Imperial Military with the power of the Dark Side (a practice that would come to be called "Battle Meditation" later on). The Sith used it in the Ancient Republic days, and Thrawn used C'baoth to harness it's power in the Thrawn trilogy.

When the effect was cut off with the deaths of Palpatine and the redemption of Vader, the "head was cut off the snake", as Aaronaman put it.

Again, 1) Obi Wan never paid much attention to droids, and 2) C-3PO also was one of many 1000s of similar droids.

Requiring Obi Wan to recognize those specific droids would be like requiring one of us to go onto a car lot and pick out on particular car that passed us on the road from a mass of other virtually identical cars on that lot.

I know what your saying but it's not like he only met them for a brief time and then went their separate ways.....he was with them for years! How many times did R2 save his life?

What visual cue would you expect to trigger him to suspect it was the same droid?

Even if there are thousands of similar units like R2 surely the fact he was a blue R2 unit...one of only three I saw in the entire saga the others being a similar unit that tried to fix the ship during the escape from Naboo (TPM) and the third was a destroyed unit behind EV-9D9 in Jabba's dungeon...who was accompanied by a golden 3PO droid with a very distinctive voice would have been enough of a trigger to remember them?

Their first meeting alone should have been enough for Obi-Wan to remember R2, not only did he save him but also this Master Qui-Gon, the Queen of Naboo, and a ship load of passengers....Obi-Wan is even present when Padme's decoy praises R2?

^Still nothing to connect the two in his head. You even admit R2 isn't the only blue/white R2 unit.

You need to stop thinking like a viewer and start thinking like a SW universe person. Droids are ubiquitous and interchangeable for the most part. Maintaining a relationship with a specific droid to the point of recognizing its individuality is rare.

I don't think it's clear that Vader knows that that is his 3PO. That story could as easily be read as a simple memory trigger rather than recognition.

If he didn't think it was 3PO he would have had the parts destroyed and not taken down to Chewie

That is just silly. You have a professional military with a job to do, and they would do it. That's just EU goofiness that quite frankly doesn't interest me. There is no evidence of any of that in the movie. The imperial officers are just humans doing their job. They aren't under some silly force spell.

With the force landing of the escape pod in Episode:IV, how did 3PO and R2 avoid being in the words of 3PO, "Smashed into who knows what!!??".

The word begun implies a not too distant start date. If they had started this before the first one got blown up then a better use of words would be "Little does Luke know that the GALACTIC
EMPIRE has secretly been constructing a new..."
If a bridge was started five years ago and will be finished in two months, would it be very accurate to say "The construction of the bridge has begun"?

They still have a lot of surface area to cover, armour, guns etc. The SL is operational so it is likely that more than half the work has been completed.

    Bye for now.

The Rise & Fall of Darth Vader repeats the story- and it's clearer in that that Vader knows.

For the same reason Nazi Germany surrendered a week after Hitler died. He was the embodiment of Nazi Germany, just as Palpatine was the embodiment of the Empire.
