I've called it Sorcerer's Stone since the 90's and I'm not changing that now.

If I'm not mistaken, I think the whole first book was Americanised for the US market. After that JKR told them to stuff it.

That's so dumb. So what if a few words are not typical in the American English? It's always better in it's original form. [face_plain]

I read the original version because Canada was close enough to Britain to keep things as is and at 7 years old I just needed a couple things clarified, otherwise it was all good. Tried to read the American version in recent years and gave up after 2 chapters, was too different.

Try reading the 'Bowdlerised' texts of Shakespeare to find something really dumb!

I don't remember if we got that version in school or not... Ehh that's Victorian England for you (ok ok, technically Georgian England :p )

When were you at school Adaml83? I was in durance vile 60s and 70s, and we had the proper texts (even were set Chaucer, and if anything would outrage sensitive morals one or two of those Tales would!)!

Oh, so because I am an American, I haven't been reading the original version of Philosopher's Stone? I don't think I would have been that confused by those terms, and I was actually familiar with the term Philosopher's Stone before I had even read Harry Potter, so if they would have kept the original name I wouldn't have been confused.

I read the X-wing Series like this; 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 9, 9, 3, 5 5 55555. I could only get them from the school library, and they got them all over the place. And they didn't get Wraith Squadron for so long! Then I met Dom over Starfighters of Adumar (I was returning it, he was (im)patiently waiting for it). And he just so happened to own that magical 5th book!

I love all the British-isms in the HP books! Besides, I don't see American books being edited, and that messed me up on an end-of-year English test! (Favorite vs Favourite, and my teacher refused to cut me some slack!) :p

I agree Katana, I was appalled when they changed it for the US Market.....seriously?! It looked almost like they attempted to 'dumb it down' assuming the US readers couldn't decipher English terms. It was insane....and insulting!

It's just like any other basic language translation. Some words just don't mean the same in both "versions" of English or are spelled the same way. Slang/terminology is the same way.

Hey, I didn't see Aaron Allston having things edited for an Aussie audience, but I did a hell of a spit take when he talked about Piggy doing a 'fanny shake'. IT MEANS SOMETHING DIFFERENT HERE, AA!!

Bingo! Here that would be considered a lurid and disgusting act that if done in public would have you arrested for indecent exposure!!! Different part of the body here!

This is what we are saying, see the rest of the world has to learn American terminology, but the Americans can't learn anyone else's? Like I said, the implication is you are not clever enough, but I know that's garbage......

Imagine if they'd anglicised a book like The Color Purple. Would ruin the entire narrative tone. It's just weird to have a British kid talking like an American full stop.

Sounds like the title of a really dodgy 70s porn film...

It happens more than you realise to you guys. The Road Warrior.....the rest of the world got it as Mad Max ;) I never understood why they did it, but it was the 'film approval people' or whatever they are there who made the decisions for you guys and you are right, its insulting.

I need to get back to reading these books. I took a hiatus from this series over the break this weekend
