Well I never knew that Americans said Clara wrong.
*adds to the list between 'Cecil' and 'data'*

For the record I've always heard both 'claire - ah' and 'claire-ra' [face_dunno]

Well with the news yesterday it didn't take some gif people long:

    Not wrong, just differently. :)
    That's their actual name..
Now, I call the Companion by the episode pronunciation, and I expect if an American went to Britain they'd pronounce the American's name they way they do. Because I think of them as different names with the same spelling.

It's not like how regionally people pronounce Coyote coy-ot and cai-o-tee, (and one is right and the other wrong, methinks),it's how I've heard it said across the country, because its the pronunciation that people give to the name.

Wait, what are the two pronunciations for that?

I'm not actually sure what that word's supposed to be...

For the record, I use colour, as opposed to the American color.

Linguistics is my hobby and even I can't justify lef'tenant. Our shared pronunciation of Colonel in English makes some sense given its French pronunciation. But the French pronunciation of lieu sounds nothing like lef. Our mutual British ancestors just couldn't hear :p

Clara in the US is indeed always pronounced like the BTTF 3 character. The thing is, saying "Clah-ruh" in a general American accent kind of makes you sound like a tool :p I feel weird saying it. It's like how with reference to Tomb Raider, I feel like a pretentious jerk if I say "Lah-ruh" instead of "Lor-uh".

If Star Trek can say Data correctly, I'm sure people can cope with Clara

Mind you even the characters in Star Wars don't know how to pronounce Leia

Wait, people don't say "Lara" like "Laura." They're spelled differently. At least, I've never heard anyone in the media (promotions, journalists) or in person pronounce any way other than "Lah-ruh," unless they mistakenly think her name is "Laura."

Janet Fielding played Teagan in the 80s mostly alongside the 5th Doctor
Nick Briggs voices The Daleks, Cybermen, Judoon and I believe the Ice Warriors in the New Series
    John Leeson voiced K-9

So Everton and I come into this thread after finally seeing the episode, expecting a great and productive discussion about it - and you people are talking about the pronunciation of the name "Clara"?!

Point 1: The British pronunciation of "lieutenant" comes from a very old alternate form, leuf, of the French lieu, that somehow stuck. So they're both right.

Point 2: Completely agree. However, I found when introducing myself in England that folks simply couldn't understand the American pronunciation of "Clara." So I tried it their way and it turned out I quite liked it. :)

Karen was tall, but JLC's apparently really short.

    And cute.

That was kind of my point. We've had 3 years of David Tennant with female companions that were all considerably shorter than him, and then we had 2.5 years of Matt Smith with a female companion who was pretty much his height - but we've only had two episodes with JLC, who is much shorter than Matt. So I guess it's pretty understandable that there would be an assumption that David is taller than Matt (plus David is much slimmer, which would make him appear even taller).

10 and 11 are too similar to come to blows. 9 should be there to even things up a bit.
