To be fair to Santorum, he was never arguing that sitcoms make people gay. He was arguing that it changed public attitudes about pre-existent homosexuality.

Eh, still derpy. Santorum can't accept the idea that maybe...just maybe...society is moving into the 21st century and recognizing that legalized homophobia is not acceptable, just as our parents/grandparents' generation came to realize that legalized racism was not acceptable. His attempts to blame society's slow change in attitude on a television sitcom and label that television sitcom as "evil" is just hilarious.

"Lawmaker makes a bad comparison during an unimportant conversation" is even more accurate IMO, but then people might realize that they are wasting their lives following this stuff...

He mentioned bestiality (only one A, so go derp yourself) while making a slippery-slope argument concerning gay marriage. He talks about magazine limits, mentions the slippery slope, and then goes onto the topic of gay marriage. So for Juliet to say he "compares gun control to bestiality" is just making the facts a bit sexier to get more clicks onto the website's link.

Fox News does that all the time. They really do get whatever host or"expert" time to make several comparisons to unrelated thoings in order to group them togethe you can get secularism, liberalism, beastiality, gay marriage, socialism all grouped together into one evil lump. It happens with great frequency.

I have to recommend Room 237 to any serious connoisseur of the derp. The highlight of the film is the reveal that Stanley Kubrick staged the fake moon landing using the cutting edge front screen projection techniques developed for 2001, and The Shining contains his subliminal confession.

I've seen the movie half a dozen times without making the connection:

As I should have noticed the first time I saw this movie, the carpet pattern is the shape of launch pad 39A.

A nearly flawless conspiracy and cover-up, then Kubrick blows the lid off with that Apollo 11 sweater.

Whatever happened to just venting your frustrations to a private journal?

It's easier to be a whiny brat attention whore in the days when journalistic publication standards have deteriorated.

It was very ambitious of her, belatedly, to vent to the WSJ though. Had she done it earlier, she might have gotten into an Ivy League on that alone.

This is the sort of attitude that usually correlates strongly with failing general studies math, so, really, those Ivy League schools are doing her bank account a favor.

Not a particularly derpy item but still; in a way she is right. Many folks, including a recent President, bought their way in rather than do any real work to get in. Still, it is just whining and I don't understand why "having two moms" is thrown in there.

"Be yourself", without any qualification, is bad advice to give to a young person.

Of course it is. We should teach all young people to be someone else. The Internet is a great place to start.

Seniors found out en masse the end of last week what schools they got into. Tensions are running high. It would have been nice if WSJ could have found a slightly less whiny voice for the vast majority of prospective college students who weren't accepted into Stanford or an Ivy League school. "Looks like the University of Illinois" is still pretty much the mantra of the rest of us. Things really haven't changed that much since I applied to college.

It would only be whiny if she were complaining about something unimportant.

Her gripe is that she wasn't taught something very important ie that society is competitive and that appearances matter.

All of the adults in her life failed to communicate this message to her. It's actually kind of sad...

Maybe she can parlay her newly found punditry into an Ann Coulter-esque career. Her distaste for minorities and the needy make her a promising candidate for Fox News.

There's a strong perception that students who bring diversity to the table - be it in the form of being an ethnic minority, or being gay, or whatever - have better shots at getting into schools, or getting scholarships, or whatever. Of course, the ultimate irony is that in quite a lot of disciplines there's also a perception that being female improves your odds, but that never occurs to her. Nor does it occur to her that most of us with connections to the LGBT community are not exactly keen to bank on it when we're in high school, but then, you sort of have to live it to understand that.

I remember that. I really really wanted to disavow Robertson and Fallwell being from Virginia. Still do.
