Interesting to see basically what regions are in more constant economic exchange with one another, at least on the low level of people buying things you can get with cash.

 

I WAS JUST COMING IN HERE TO POST THAT.

But the other maps on that article are way cooler!

 

I like the phone one. Both maps basically establish what I could have told you, that you might as well have one state from the middle of Kansas all the way through Missouri into the suburbs of St. Louis in Illinois. Although I'm a bit surprised that they're cut off a bit from Iowa and Nebraska.

 

I'm pretty sure I saw that map in 2006, if not earlier.

That's really cool!

This also proves that New England deserves to be its own region

Big sports programs are a mixed blessing for a university. They bring in lots of money on their own, raise awareness and the prestige of the school in the eyes of the public (people are far more likely to think you went to a 'real school' if they've seen your football team on TV), and are probably the #1 reason that alumni make donations to universities. And those things can all benefit a school, no doubt. But then they increasingly require more money to be spent on them, on player scholarships, on high tech equipment and new facilities, etc. So it's a bit of a catch-22.

Still, I will point out that most public employees work in service and governance, and it's actually pretty rare for a government job to be something that brings in a profit or even includes that as part of its framework. As such, I wouldn't really expect many other public employees to top this list because they aren't doing a job where they can raise millions of dollars for the public institution at which they work.

I'm not saying our attitude towards college sports is entirely healthy. I definitely don't think it is in certain respects. I'm just saying that it's intellectually dishonest to oversimplify this to, "wow they pay those guys millions of dollars while high school teachers get crap pay!" True enough, but high school teachers don't bring in millions of dollars for scholarships and everyone else's salaries at their school, either. A head coach of a major sports team can. It's a sometimes ugly reality, but it is reality nonetheless.

I knew something was off when I saw "much more church" for Chittenden County, Vermont - home to Burlington, one of the more liberal towns in this country (not to mention a college town). Then I remembered that Church Street is the name of the main shopping and dining thoroughfare in Burlington.
