C-3PO's fate

I was just wondering does anyone have theories on how C-3PO "dies". I know there was a Tales story but was that cannon?

Honestly I wouldn't mind if C-3PO was around forever. Even in like 1000 ABY.

 

Could you imagine: C-3PO as the only remaining relic of the PT/OT era, recalling what he'd been through? Love the thought of it.

Write a fanfic about it.

I must profess ignorance - is there really a story about the final fate of 3PO? If so it's a gap in my (once thorough, now less so) knowledge.

 

I found it on the Wook on 3PO's page. It a Tales comic if I remember.

 

Looked it up it is called Storyteller.

True, but as deaths go, that one's not bad...Threepio ends up as a relic of a bygone age, inspiring a new generation. I wouldn't mind Han's Tales death being canon either...

Han's death in Tales was definitely one of the best... er, tales. In Tales. As tales spin.

And this thread suddenly made me realize for the first time that 3PO and R2 actually stand a serious chance of "perishing" somehow in the ST. I never, ever considered that before. Even in Legacy, I keep assuming 3PO's around somewhere.

Great another thing to keep me up worrying at night.

Actually, it's ambiguously canon. We can't be sure until it's referenced or contradicted by something else.

 

The mortality of droids is funny. it's not exactly clear how it works, meaning, specifically, how the hardware/software interface comes together. Do droids have a 'mind state' like the Minds of the Culture universe? This seems the most obvious approach, and we do know that IG-88, at least, was a self-aware droid able to copy himself into alternate systems. however it is not clear whether or not this applies to all droids.

If it does, then a droid can be made effectively immortal quite easily, since their mind can be copied out of their body and placed in long-term storage. In the case of R2-D2 and C-3PO there's actually a very good reason to do this: preserved, they would become basically the ultimate interactive primary sources for a very important period of galactic history.

Of course, I suspect the more basic question is how long can they continue to trundle around the galaxy is an actually functional capacity. The basic answer is probably as long as their owners continue to upgrade their systems. Star Wars tech moves slowly, but it does adapt effectively enough that, after several centuries or so, they probably wouldn't be able to interact with current tech anymore is continual adjustments hadn't been made. At some point, that would probably include their primary processing cores, which of course can't be replaced without destroying the personalities they contain. That's probably when their use date is up.

 

I have always wondered where C-3PO has been during Legacy.

 

I would be very sad if Artoo died. In a weird way he kind of a role model for me.

 

Also, R2 is the one who tells the events of the Saga to the Whills.
