Gosh this battle was so ridiculous. I mean the Gungans and the droids line up in battlelines, and charge each other. I understand that the Gungans had a shield which prevented "far away artillery attacks" that were only a few hundred meters away but they Trade Federation had a bunch of battleships blockading Naboo...you'd think they could just bombard the area and wipe of the Gungans. The decimation of an area of a planet doesn't seem like something the Trade Federation wouldn't do...

you could say the same thing about the battle of Geonosis,

the Jedi were fighting non force sensitive pieces of metal, there was no point to charge in on them either.

Why was the trade federation there? Plasma.

Can't bomb away when you are trying to harvest the resources.

Plus there's only one ship there at the time of the battle- the Droid Command Ship.

As converted freighters, the Trade Federation's ships are not going to be much for orbital bombardment- they carry armies and fighter fleets, and have some anti-starship weaponry- they're not true warships.

Like what SithStarSlayer said, the TF was there to gather resources such as plasma. If they just bombarded the area with attacks, the resources could possibly have been destroyed or tarnished.

Just to keep things straight there was no indication in the movie that they were there to do anything other than blockade. They were not there together resources. there was zero reason in the movie for them to hold back from bombarding the surface of the planet.

They didn't just "blockade"- they landed on the planet and herded the inhabitants into camps.

Then they sent most of their ships away.

Then the Jedi arrived, with the Queen, and got the aid of the Gungan army.

... the point is there is no in movie explanation for why they didn't just bomb crap out of them.

Because they've only got one ship?

Sure there is. There's a reason the US never firebombed Kyoto during WWII, after all.

The Trade Federation's greed. Naboo has a rich and beautiful culture. All of that art and architecture isn't going to be worth much if it's reduced to rubble. Plus all those grasslands would be very economically viable if you farmed them -- something you certainly can't do if you bomb it to hell and back. Monetarily, the most rational thing to do would be to put all the inhabitants to work and let them die off of starvation. You get some productivity out of them while you minimize food and housing costs. Of course it's completely immoral but I don't necessarily think that the Trade Federation would care all that much, given that they participated in a galactic civil war and invaded the planet in the first place.

Why didn't the rebels just drop their fighters right next to the exhaust port instead of flying down that long trench? Why did the Empire put ridiculously long legs on their walkers that would make them easy to topple? How are the Emperor's best troops beaten by teddy bears with sticks? Oh wait, who cares?

You know, I really wish Lucas would have mentioned this in the movie, because it would have clarified a lot of the TF's own agenda. Especially the important bit about plasma. Ah, well.

That's where most hidden story stuff comes from that I read about. People who read a lot of the books put their info in there, so there's a plethora of info there. Not that it's all reliable, but it kind of makes you think about things, you know?

This is the reason, in fact, all 6 films never show or indicate that any of the capital ships like TF battleships, Rep SDs, Imp SDs, or Rebel Cruisers can bomb planets. At least with any accuracy. Why didn't the Rebel fleet bomb the second Death Star after the shields were down, or bomb the shield genrator base on Endor to bring said shields down? Why didn't the Imperial fleet bomb Echo Base's shields until they failed?

Darth Sidious held them back from bombing the surface when he said "Begin landing your troops." The trade federation couldn't bomb Naboo because Padme would have had all the proof that she needed. Anything more than a peaceful occupation would force the Republic to act when Darth Sidious was using the INVASION to bog the Senate down in procedure to secure power.

In ESB, bear in mind just before Vader kills Ozzel, General Veers reports that "COMSCAN has detected an energy field protecting the sixth planet of the Hoth system. The field is strong enough to prevent any bombardment." Vader then complains that the Rebels were alerted to the fleet's presence, and that Ozzel came out of lightspeed too close to the system. The implication you'd get from that is that Imperial Star Destroyers, at least, can bombard planets from orbit, but not through a planetary shield. That's why Vader orders a surface attack.

(I would infer from that that this was one of the main reasons for the Death Star, aside from the fear and terror element: it could destroy a planet with one shot, but to do so its superlaser was powerful enough to penetrate a planetary shield. Thus surface attacks and committing troops to remove planetary shields were now unnecessary.)

As for why the Rebel Fleet didn't bomb the shield generator base on Endor: take another look at the briefing scene with Admiral Ackbar. The shield from Endor doesn't just cover the Death Star. It also covers a cone-shaped projection out from the the generator itself, right up from the planet. If it was of a similar strength to that of the Hoth shield, you'd presume the Rebels couldn't bombard through it either.

Although I'm glad Hoth had its planetary shield.

This is about the battle, not the invasion.
