Will Disney consider the lost of a limb, or other body part including a head, to be too violent for its versions of Star Wars...

You can't have a Star Wars movie without someone losing something. Its every film and I demand someone get something hacked off in Ep 7...

It's a tradition. I look forward to how they do it this time. As long as they don't "Evil Dead" it then we should be fine. :p

Dismembered body parts will literally fill every inch of the screen. Is that good enough for you?

There's been a few Disney movies with a measure of violence lately, John Carter, I don't mind the odd bit of violence because the Saga is full of it just as long as its not violence for violence sake.

People got shot and stabbed plenty in Pirates of the Caribbean, even in Disney's animated stuff.

Shouldn't be a problem in Star Wars

This actually opens up a larger and broader question: in the Disney/LFL era, can we expect or (if you're into that) hope for a continuation of the Saga's philosophy of showing violence (albeit using clever tricks to hide the worst of it from eyes of younger viewers)? Or will Disney choose to have that toned down, perhaps removed?

We can consider that not every film bankrolled by Disney in some way necessarily conforms to a Disney-standard film. For the obvious Disney-canon, the animated films and such, yes, there's a clear standard of how they do things (and even there, they were never afraid to provide shocking moments; Bambi's mother died, for Christ's sake!). But they have more than just the main Disney studios, they own numerous smaller film companies that put out other kinds of fare than the usual cartoon movies with animal characters that have big, sweet eyes. There's a host of films with Disney's money on them that have violence, some of a harsher type than what we see in Star Wars; there's some Disney-bankrolled films with sex that's more overt than in Star Wars. They've done this for a decade or more, so the POTENTIAL is there for Disney to adhere to the standard of semi-suggested/semi-shown violence established in the Saga.

It's true that Star Wars has never shied away from violence when it was necessary: the films HAVE to be that way, in order to buttress the main point that it's how we as human beings respond to the fact of a violent universe. But the fact is that even Lucas himself had standards of how much violence to actually show. Dismembered limbs aside, it's not like Lucas indulged in orgies of violence and bloodletting in the first place. Yes, Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru were shown as crispy charcoal briquettes (do I smell bacon?), but it was brief and shot at a distance to establish a bit of a sense of remove, and that was one of the BLOODIEST scenes in the OT, the trilogy that was the least likely to shy away from violence. Nor did the PT hold back all that much either, considering that Lucas had since become less sanguine about actually showing extreme violence: Yes, Shmi was kidnapped and tortured (and, one assumes, raped; it was at least suggested), but it's not like Lucas filmed the whole affair, any more than he filmed a large-scale incident of mass murder soon after in the same film; all of that was very much THERE, but it was suggested, not played out for us as torture porn. Only the burning of Anakin was overt, and that HAD to be in order to work dramatically. Even in TCW, there were examples of violence using cinematic tricks to hide the worst of it from the viewer: Maul and Savage film a hostage tape in which he decapitates a whole row of hostages on screen; we don't see the saber stroke, but the subsequent falling of a row of bodies make the point clearly enough. Maul decapitates Vizsla - or at least I think he did, because Bo-Katan's head was in the way - but I still got the point: the show won't be about THAT guy anymore...

Finally, we also have to consider that what Disney is trying to do is reawaken the spirit that permeated the original films; they wouldn't do so much to shove the PT era to the back burner if they weren't signalling that they were going to embrace the spirit of the OT instead when they do the ST. And the OT did have violent scenes (as I said, it never shied from violence; it was the only one to show a bleeding stump from a lightsaber wound), but it was usually offset with a little more of a sense of fun and adventure. If they want to return to that sort of vibe for the ST, we can expect violence, yes, but also a bit more roller-coaster excitement than in the PT. But if Disney knows anything, it's that the most pivotal scene of the OT involved the cutting off of a hand and a chilling scream of pain; violence is meant as a way to punctuate dramatic moments, and that's how it's done in a LOT of Disney films, animated or otherwise (again, Bambi's mother). It's not just something for Star Wars; it's basic plot construction. Given all that, I still see potential for all the hand-hacking hijinks we've all come to know and love from the Saga.

I think people are reading too much into the Disney buyover. They see "Disney" and immediately think of kiddie cartoons and Disney princesses. Pocohontas, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella et al.

But Disney is a pretty big umbrella and has a bunch of pretty violent stuff under it. Pearl Harbor (to name just one) was a Disney movie, and it had people getting blown to bits, traumatic surgery with blood everywhere (including a nurse saving a guy's life by plugging his spurting artery with her finger), triage scenes complete with nurses lying to mortally wounded men about their prognosis, people burning to death, people being entrapped in upturned battleships facing drowning, etc.

If Disney did that, Disney can do anything that's ever been seen in a SW film to date.

Speaking of Donald, if you want a decidedly "Non Disney-esque" Disney production, look no further than the infamous Der Fuehrer's Face:

To those who think Disney will make everything cute and G, watch the pirates of the carribean series. That had torture, whippings, and fathers being forced to cut out their own son's heart. Yeah....disney ain't afraid of showing some blood.

I fear that the only way to stop those possessed by the spirits of the Force is through the act of... bodily dismemberment.

Even The Clone Wars on Cartoon Network has violent amputations. That's just part of the game with lightsaber fights.

It's also worth noting that limb amputations aren't the big deal in the GFFA that they are in real life, because you can just get a full-functional robot prosthesis to replace your lost limb, that integrates directly with the nerve endings in the stump and behaves exactly like the limb you lost. Depending on preference, this can look clearly mechanical, or indistinguishable from a normal biological limb.

It's kinda funny...I remember that as a small child, the violent amputations didn't phase me (Obi-Wans bar fight, Luke/Vader duel in ESB) however seeing Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru's smoking corpses did.

Funny, it was the opposite for me. I could not watch the scene where Luke loses his hand until I was 10 years old. I always hid behind the couch until after Vader said 'I am your father'.

Then again, I was a wimpy kid...movie witches, especially the wicked witch of the west, scared the living crap out of me. :p

Also, don't forget about the Narnia movies: the lion the witch and the wardrobe, and Prince Caspian had plenty of killing! sure we didn't see the blood per se, but it was definitely implied in all of their battles.

Also there is nothing "Bambi Style Disney" about the national treasure movies, Or The Avengers.

Also movies like Tron, and Oz the great and powerful came from Disney as well...

Bottom line-I'm not too worried about this sequel trilogy being made too kiddie-cutie! I think they know what's at stake here...
