JCC Native American Nicknames Y/N?

This argument starts up again every few years. Where does the JCC stand on this social issue? Inquiring minds want to know!

Yes it's racist, no it shouldn't exist. That's all the needs to be said.

 

What about Vikings as a nickname? Is that racist?

I think Redskins/Indians should be nixed.
Others like Braves and Fighting Illini seem to be more of a tribute.

 

I'm okay with names after specific tribes, but not generic (And consistently racist) broad swath terms like, well, Redskins.

 

If the Redskins were not a team, they never existed, and were coming in as an expansion team, I don't see how anybody would think it would be a good idea to name that team the Redskins. Braves, sure, named after a specific tribe, alright. But to name them after a skin color? That's crazy. And to say to keep it because of tradition is nuts a well. A lot of traditions in this country had faded because of resist roots. This one needs to as well.

I wouldn't have a problem if there was a team called the Whiteskins.

 

Being that white people have never really been significantly discriminated against for the color of our skin, I don't imagine a lot of us would be offended by that Tunick.

I wonder why there hasn't been discussions this week concerning the Cleveland Indians...the name is as iffy as the Redskins, but their primary logo is a 1000x's worse.

 

I agree, while personally I don't think their name is as abrasive as the Redskins, their logo takes the cake.

Let's set aside examples of the Patriots and Cowboys, as those aren't even the same category, and suggest you aren't even entirely familiar with what the actual concerns here are. Instead, we'll focus on thinks like the Celtics or Vikings.

I feel like how a culture or ethnic group chooses to represent its own past, especially when it is in the majority and traditionally holds most of the levers of societal power, is a wildly different discussion than how they choose to represent historically disadvantaged ethnically minorities.

But I also feel we're about a breath away from a discussion about the terrible oppression of white people, and how unfair it is that you don't "get to" use the n-word.

 

Don't forget "WHY NO WHITE HISTORY MONTH?"

 

I know I had friends who never liked the NFL because of the Washington Redskins. The tribe names never really bothered them as most sports teams are aspiring to be tribe like.
